Cornell note taking connects and condenses ideas from textbooks lectures, structure helps review ideas and compare ideas. Revising and making new connections using a graphic organizer helps students review, reflect, and test their memory and understanding. “The Cornell method of scoring is a system invented in the 1950s by Walter Pauk, a professor at Cornell University.” Students divide their paper into two or three notebooks: the right column is for “taking notes: summary, explanation, descriptions, unknown words” and the “cue set” on the left is for rules, questions and or topics.
Organized note-taking for class lectures, Socratic forum “text analysis,” close reading activities, and or collaborative reading lessons are best recorded in Cornell’s two-book format; notes or comments can be relevant information, ideas, arguments, facts, opinions, clarifying questions, stated ideas, statements supporting main ideas/topics, and/or references to unknown laws. Always be flexible and think outside the box, students need to find fun new ways to interact with lectures or text, students looking for fun ways to participate to take active notes on a deeper level. Students will want to review and share what fascinates them during lectures, Socratic discussions, or close readings. Students will really use their notes for revision, self-examination, and processing new information when they have a personal model that works for the topic. Students can use descriptions, text code symbols, bulleted headings, context clues, symbols, signatures, and links. Lotus Notes can be integrated with Cornell Notes to assist with self-questioning, revision and reflection on writing and either clarification or opening up of final questions. Students should learn how ideas and answers should be supported with textual evidence and review before and after lectures or readings to increase understanding. Questions should always be at the forefront of students’ minds while reading and taking notes. Using Cornell’s notes allows students and teachers to differentiate, adapt, and adapt to everyone’s abilities.

They say and look at the thoughts that come to mind based on the keywords or questions. Collaborative partners can discuss ideas, compare notes, share important information and/or text evidence, and ask each other questions. The Recite and Visualize step requires students to clearly explain what they are reading or seeing using key words. During Socratic discussion, students often communicate using complete sentences with their peers or teachers. Cover on the left side! Students cover the terms, topics and questions, they say the terms, topics and questions and the connection they made and/or changes to previous knowledge.
4. 10, 24, 7 and Reflect and summarize: Students should reflect on what they have learned and share their thoughts with their partners after 10 minutes, the next day 24 hours and 7 days after that. Students or teachers can ask interview questions to check depth of knowledge.
The teacher can hand out an exit ticket: Have students write a descriptive sentence about the lesson or reading activity.
5. Review and Self-Test!: It is very important for memorization and retention that students test themselves using their notes. Modeling the uses, techniques, strategies, and importance of using Cornell Notes for review, study, and self-examination continues. Students need plenty of time and opportunities to use their notes and discuss ideas with their partners. Using Cornell notes for ASSIGNMENTS or reviewing ideas strengthens students’ memory and retention of what they have learned.
