Autobiography Poem Template
You may be wondering why it is important to teach children to write poetry. I ask why not. Children are never too small for poetry. I have childhood memories of my father reading poetry to me in the evenings, and I still vividly remember those poems and how they made me feel. Poetry allows us to gain new experiences and understand our feelings. It can connect children to literature that other resources cannot. Studying poetry turned the struggling reader in me into a literature lover who continues to actively read, share and teach poetry today.

Poetry teaches children to visualize and experience things in their imagination. Poetry for children often rhymes and is fun to read. It is crucial and can be used to teach children to read, write, listen and speak. Singing poems together in class can be a fun experience. I teach another poem of the week that we read over and over again to develop our reading skills. We discuss the lyrics and what feelings and thoughts they evoke. For children who may have difficulty writing creatively, writing a poem can help with that. The poems follow patterns and have a structure that children need and find comfort in. It can be a gateway to different writing styles as you build your confidence through poetry writing. It also allows children to develop vocabulary, vocabulary and grammar.
Before I delve into teaching a particular style of poetry, I want to share some of my favorite children’s poems. I have collections of poetry by Shel Silverstein, Jack Prelutsky, Denis Lee, and many others. My absolute favorite children’s poem of all time is Alligator Pie. I learned it as a young girl and taught it in my class every year.
To start writing bio-poetry, read Jamie Lee Curtis’s book Today I Feel Silly & Other Moods That Make My Day. This book is perfect for extracting the vocabulary of character traits. We share our associations and brainstorm different words in the table.
Teaching With Terhune: Poetry Unit
In order to teach children the style and form of writing biopoetry, I created an anchor table that we could complete together. We went row by row sharing ideas with our neighbors on the carpet and then orally in class. I wrote one idea for example. This chart is useful for those students who need extra help with writing.
Students are given blank planning sheets in which to write their biographical poems. They write about themselves at their desks using the template below. This template is available for free at the end of the post.
Before the first activities, stories and examples, students are relatively confident and independent in writing their draft poems. For writing with young children, one draft is usually enough, but when it comes to writing poetry, I like to write a polished, edited piece and create an introduction.
As part of an exhibition for our biographical poems, we rewrote our poems on a folded white board to make it look like an envelope. Create the same look by cutting large squares from thicker cardboard and folding the corners inwards. Students learn how to use a ruler to draw straight lines of the correct length. They copy their edited lines on the lines inside the envelope shape.

After rewriting their poem, they trace their handwriting with fine markers. They decorate the outside of the envelope with patterns of their own creativity.
When they are on the bulletin board, it makes for a unique display. The exhibition of biopoetry is entitled “Who am I!” and invites readers to take a closer look inside.

Quick summary: First, I show students an anchor chart that clearly teaches everyday literacy. Then I love to model both on examples I’ve written and on real examples from famous authors.
After students have seen a poem in several settings and practiced reading these types of poems, we focus on WRITING POEMS.
English Worksheets: Autobiography Poem Template
Before I let students write their own poems, I model the poem writing with a template.
First, I show the students a blank model and we connect it back to the model. I then show students how I can complete the template by doing a collaborative writing assignment. In class, we come up with ideas and then read the poem aloud to make sure we hit the right part.
Finally, I let students use the template as a guide to writing their own poems. I usually show a template for students to use, but I don’t make a copy for each student. This free-standing rack encourages students to memorize the pattern and copy the poetry onto any page.
Some rows must match the pattern exactly, while others can be modified. I’m definitely talking about a breakup. For example, haiku SHOULD follow the same format each time, in which autobiographical poems can be modified according to the writer’s interests.
