Alphabet Poems – Looking for a new way to introduce your weekly letter? One of my weekly tasks is to introduce a new alphabet poem at the beginning of the school year. I either write the poem on chart paper or use a pocket chart version I made. Every Monday I introduce a verse and we use it throughout the week. We sing verses every day, and my relatives cheer me on. Along with reciting the poem, I help the children to highlight the entire content of the poem. They love to “pen share” with me. In addition to reciting the poem and highlighting the weekly letter, we also focus on print tracking. When I read a poem to children, I use my pointer or finger to mark each word. This is a great way to teach orientation, print control and other pre-reading skills. Did I mention, these poems are also great for practicing sleep!
After a few days of using the poem, we add other words that begin with the focus letter at the bottom of the anchor chart. The kids help me find the words and I draw and label them. We also went back and marked the images on the anchor chart.
Alphabet Poems
After using the poem for a week, I hang the poem in the classroom for future reference. Children can use the poem’s anchor chart to find familiar words, identify and write sight words.
True Friend’s Alphabet
I will also give a copy of the poem to my children. We keep these poems in our poetry notebooks. After the group has read the whole poem, the children use their copy as a familiar reading.

The alphabet song represents the letters of the alphabet and their sounds. Rhythm and rhythm attract the attention of young students. Through repetition, students will soon be able to join in the singing. When they hear or sing the alphabet song, the association between letter and sound is strengthened.

Although it is designed to highlight letter/sound associations, it can also be effectively used to introduce letters or sounds, reinforce rhymes, highlight initial sounds, and/or support sight word recognition. This pack includes an alphabet set and corresponding sight word flash cards to expand and reinforce skills as you complete the song pages.
The alphabet chant book is very versatile and can be adapted to suit your needs. It will be completed in a week or two or two or three months. It can be used to insert or reinforce letters and sounds. It can complement alphabet study or be used as an intervention tool. Pages can be filled out alphabetically or out of order to match your audio introduction series. Make a book from the finished pages or prepackage the pages and have students color each page. You can even use the song sheets as individual pages to send to each household when they are finished!
No matter which options you choose, your students will love the alphabet song. It’s a fun and interactive way to focus on letters and sounds!
