Acrostic Poem On Earth

Acrostic Poem On Earth – Did you know Earth Day is on Friday this year? So you can prepare for a week of learning with your students about ways to help the environment. Here are some helpful books and resources to get you started!

Like most elementary teachers, I use picture books (fiction and non-fiction) to create knowledge. Here are some of my favorite books to share:

I like to have an anchor chart ready to collect our thoughts as we read:

As we read, I record ideas and information students share on an anchor chart. Since I often link our writing lessons to themes and holidays, students use this as a reference tool in their writing block:

If I have a full week to focus on an upcoming vacation, I choose a chapter book for my read-alouds or orientation groups. I have two kid-friendly novels!

First and second graders will love finding out how these super winners will solve their next problem. During the week, students read the book and can take a comprehension test after each chapter.

We also pay attention to the vocabulary in the text. I print the vocabulary cards on plain paper so the words stand out on the pocket chart.

After reading the text, we play a little memory game with the words. I print a second set of vocabulary cards in a different color. The game looks easy, right? ! No! When children find a match, they should be able to give a definition to keep the pair of cards or use the phrase correctly in a sentence!

When using this book as a read-aloud, the graphic organizer is a great tool to help students focus on the reading goal. Since Cam Johnson’s books are part of the mystery genre, students can focus on suspects, mysteries, and hidden details along the way.

Freddie is a person who connects and bonds with many students. As with the Cam Johnson series, you can check your understanding after each chapter. Sometimes we write the answers, sometimes I use them to discuss the book.

Celebrating Earth Day With Student Activities

After completing a few word games and activities, I like to test my students’ understanding of vocabulary with a matching worksheet.

Sometimes you need a little something extra, especially when it comes to the holidays. Remember those promised freedoms? Here you go!

First the ABC order page. Students are looking for the second and third letters to determine the correct order.

Find the next word. You can liven things up by letting your students use the colors blue and green!

Since April is Poetry Month, I’ve included a Darer’s Day acrostic poem template. I recommend doing a whole-class brainstorm on an anchor chart first. You can use any of the books mentioned above to collect words and verbs that your students can use when writing an acrostic poem.

On Thursday, April 30, we will celebrate “Poem in Your Pocket.” The elementary school will gather at the train yard at 9:15 am to share their pocket poems with friends and classmates. High school students do the same in their humanities classes, and high school students have the opportunity to collect poems from their “pockets” that are displayed around campus and shared with friends. Make it a point to carry your poem in your pocket that day and share it with someone else!
