What is a bar chart? A bar chart (or bar chart) is a type of chart in which each vertical bar represents a categorical variable (having two or more categories, unordered). An example of such a distinction would be gender (with two or more possible categories, e.g. male and female). A bar chart is used to compare the frequency of categories with different bar lengths. If the bars are arranged vertically, it is called a column chart. For bar and column charts, your category – or dependent – should be your category axis, and amount – or your variable – should be your number axis. In other words, the volume runs the length (if horizontal) or the length (if vertical) of the bar.
