Free Bowtie Pattern

Free Bowtie Pattern – I’m a bit obsessed with the bow tie as you can see HERE , HERE and HERE . They are easy to make and are a great beginner sewing project.

To add an extra element of design, I thought I’d switch things up a bit this time and have these bow ties mix and match.

What makes them work is that they are real bow ties that tie together like the ones I posted HERE and they are two separate pieces so you can mix and match.

The process is the same as for Lil’ Mister Bow Ties. This time, I just simplified the tutorial a bit and included a free pattern.

*fabric: large scraps or 1/4 yard is enough, if you are cutting on the bias you may need even 1/3 or 1/2 yard

Swimsuits (can be found in the accessory aisle with snaps and buckles, get the 3/4″ hanger, you will need 1 hanger per bow tie, see picture above)

*I used good quality woven cotton for all my bow ties. I think this works well for kids. Depending on the color and quality, it can work for men too, but I recommend a silk blend with a featherweight or wool interlining for men. You can also decide to add interfacing to the cotton fabric.

There is a sizing chart with approximately how many inches to add to the end of the bow tie pattern. The size chart goes up to a size 10-12 or a neck circumference of 14-14.5 inches.

Please note: This is a mostly untested free template. I’ve tested the measurements in the chart on both of my kids, so it’s a pretty safe assumption, but it hasn’t been tested as thoroughly as a paid pattern. Neck sizes also vary between body types, so your child may not be a perfect fit on the size chart by age. If you would like to change your own measurements, you can follow the instructions I provide in my original bow tie post here. Just be sure to measure your child’s neck, around the neck, with a dress shirt. This measurement will be slightly larger than your actual neck.

How To Make A Monogrammed Bow Tie

A note on the grain: bow ties are traditionally cut on the bias. If you have enough fabric to do this, I recommend it. You won’t have to worry about notching and cutting curves. When I make bow ties for my kids, I usually use scraps, so I don’t have enough to cut the bias. My pictures and instructions in this tutorial reflect that.

3. Pin and sew. With the right sides facing the right side, pin the pairs of bow ties together. Sew with a 1/4″ seam allowance.

4. Handle the curves. If you did not cut the bow tie on the bias, cut the concave curves and notch the convex curves.

Don’t forget to cut the corners too (be careful not to cut any seams). I like to cut off the corner and then cut into the cut corner to further reduce the size.

5. Slide a sturdy safety pin into the top and let it slide almost all the way down. Now, clip the safety pin onto one layer of the bow tie. Close the pin from the outside so that it is secured from the inside.

6. Turn it right side out. This is the hardest part and requires some time and patience. Thread the safety pin through the neck of the bow tie and twist it right side out.

Speed is not your friend. If you rush too fast, you could create some big holes and some tears where the safety pin is. Some

8. Iron. Press both pieces of the bow tie generously with an iron, preferably with the steam setting as high as the fabric will allow.

Slide one of the swimsuit hooks onto the end of one of the bow ties. Fold the raw edge over 1/4 inch and then again about 1/2-3/4 inch. Clip or pin and place.

For even more mix and match fun, sew your bow ties with different colors on each side:

In these instructions, I show you how to attach it to a stuffed monkey, which is really useful for children. Instead of trying to tie the bow tie to an anxious child, first tie it to a stuffed animal or to your leg (something that is about the same circumference as your child’s neck). That way, everything is tied and ready to simply clip around your child’s neck without any hassle.

When tying a mix and match bow tie, remember that the shortest piece of the bow tie (it pulls one side down more than the other initially) will be the protruding half. It is the piece that will appear on the front. The longer half ends up as the second accent layer of the bow tie.

I love seeing my kids in handmade rags! If I can convince my husband to wear a bow tie, I definitely want to try a wool or silk version for him. Wouldn’t a wool version be just as delicious?

Hello, my name is Kevin. I was recently invited to an anniversary. It’s a grand affair, so I decided to take my girlfriend’s advice and get dressed. Can you advise if a bow tie works for such an occasion and how do I find the right one?

An anniversary is, without a doubt, an event where you can wear a suit (with a jacket with one or two buttons) and a bow tie. Any formal event is a good occasion to wear a bow tie. A suit with a bow tie will be relevant at any conventional event: a concert, an exhibition, a film premiere, as well as in a restaurant together with business partners or a loved one. You can also beautify the style of your office.

A bow tie should go well with the suit. So, for classic cases, do not use too bright colors and patterns. The most formal option: a black suit, black shoes, a white shirt and a black bow tie. When choosing and trying on your bow tie, remember that for slim and tall figures, a small bow tie works best, while a larger or wider one will work better for a larger person or a person with a round face. You can use free mockups from this site to decide the size at home, even before you buy.
