This forced me to use new tools and approach portraiture in a slightly different way.
Here I experimented with soft tools to blend and apply graphite powder for my base layer. Graphite powder has now become an indispensable material in my studio. There are many blending tools out there, but I find these soft tools apply powder evenly and are nice to hold and work with. The biggest tip I can give when faced with a curly subject like Mabel is to draw what you see. Work on small sections of a few square inches at a time. This will make the portrait seem less intimidating. For this, as with most of my portraits, I always start with the eyes. They are the soul of the portrait and if they are not true the portrait is flat and lifeless. Then I work around the eyes, adding fur above and below where I normally add the ear and the bridge of the muzzle/nose.
Always follow the direction of the fur. This is very important because it can affect the final result and in some cases you will end up with a portrait that looks completely different from the reference photo. How the fur sits and direction will define the bone structure of the subject.
I would say that graphite pencil is an easier medium to use when dealing with a subject with curly fur. It was the first device I used when I was old enough to hold a pencil! Layering the graphite powder first and then using a squishy eraser to erase the curls is a nice way to get the flow of the fur while being careful not to damage the teeth of the paper. So if you make a mistake, you don’t have any real sharp pencil lines to fight to erase.

Working in grayscale and not worrying about what colors to mix and what pencil color to choose forces us to focus on contrast and values. This improves our drawing skills and then work with paint. I didn’t use any color in this drawing, but it still looks realistic because my contrast and values are correct. Dark shadows and light highlights make the look three-dimensional.
