Plain Water Bottles To Decorate – I like repeating positive thoughts every day. So when I thought of attaching my favorite affirmation to an object I use all the time, I was excited. That’s how the DIY waterproof water bottle was born. If you’re not familiar with the concept of affirmations, they’re simple messages you repeat to yourself over and over again. As you repeat them, they begin to enter your mind and appear in your life. With this bottle, every drink will bring you pleasant thoughts that will help you focus on the positive. See how I made it!
Step 1: Cut a strip from one color of vinyl. Cut out beads of different colors. Excess vinyl weed.

Step 2: Apply lines with transfer or masking tape. I found it helpful to place a piece of leather tape on the bottom of the bottle to align the strips and make sure they are straight.

Step 6: Thread both ends of the fishing line through the holes in the lid. Add a small bead to one end (so the wire doesn’t go back through the hole) and then tie both ends together tightly. Cut the extra fishing line.

Clear Water Bottles
We recently returned from an epic summer trip to the Northern California coast and I knew I wanted to incorporate an outdoor adventure theme into my design. I wanted to remind my kids of the great outdoors and hiking among the redwoods and I love the results!
Cricut Premium Durable Vinyl is great for your water bottle as it is designed to withstand a wide range of conditions and will last for 3+ years! It’s the kind of vinyl used to add decals (washable!) to cars and numbers to mailboxes, so it can withstand even the harshest conditions! Hand washing is recommended for this water bottle (because this is the manufacturer’s recommendation for the bottle). I’ve heard plenty of anecdotal evidence that people using Premium Durable Vinyl in their dishwasher have absolutely no problems.
I started with 3 empty stainless steel water bottles. Two are straight and one is a ‘wave’ model with a neck.
Open the design in the Cricut design space and resize the image accordingly. I made a 4″ wide design for the straight bottles.

Wavy bottles require a little extra effort. Applying a straight line to a curved surface will not produce a straight line result, so any text that will be used on a curved surface will need to be slightly curved to compensate.
We’ve talked about compressing text for Tumblr before, and you’ll need to do the same with a wavy water bottle. You can either take the hard route and create/scan a water bottle paper template into Design Space to get the exact bottle dimensions, or take the easy way and play around in Design Space until the curve looks just right. It’s easy to review your measurements by eye without the extra effort of creating a template, but it may take a few pattern cuts to get it right. For this water bottle, we kept “Worry Less” at zero. Because it is on the straight side of the bottle. I gave “Hike” a curvature of -50 and “More” a curvature of -53.
I love, love, love my weeding tools so if you don’t already have one I highly recommend getting your hands on one!
Cover the vinyl design with a small piece of transfer tape and clean it with an XL scraper, then peel off the backing paper.

Stick the vinyl to the water bottle and burn it using the XL scraper until the transfer tape comes off.
I added a california bear design to the other side of the bottle and to be honest this is something I claim for myself and may have to make others for the kids! I love how this turned out! 😍
We think our kids will use this water bottle all day long, remember our outdoor adventures, and be inspired to spend more time outdoors (less screen time!).
This custom water bottle is one of my favorite Cricut projects, and I think I was incredibly inspired by the many design options you presented! I think I’ll have to make my own custom water bottle for the gym!

Let’s start with the white water bottle. It doesn’t have to be. Any solid color water bottle is fine. The bottle with the design on it should work as it will be completely covered in paint to hide the design.
Using Stickers To Decorate Your Water Bottle
If there are any stickers or vinyl attached to the bottle, we recommend removing them. Wipe with Goo Gone to remove any remaining sticky residue.
Wrap the silver piece up and down with painter’s tape. Be sure the edges are down to prevent paint from getting under the tape.
Pour the colorant into a plastic cup. If using 9 oz. Fill plastic cups, first row all the way to the bottom.
You can choose as many colors as you like, but we recommend no more than three. You can add more of one color than the other. this is great Most importantly, the parts to be painted must be identical.

Secure the water bottle to the top of the cardboard box with painter’s tape. With your other hand, gently apply a portion of the paint/medium mixture to the side of the bottle.
Shake the bottle gently to apply the paint. When the paint stops spinning, pour more from the cup and spin again. Continue until you have covered the entire bottle.
Depending on the size of the bottle you are making, you may need to apply paint/intermediate mixture to cover the entire bottle.
Place the bottle in the cardboard box and place the beverage side up. A drop of paint drips to create its own design.
