I love writing and receiving letters, either by email or regular mail. It’s a different feeling when you write or receive a letter through the mail. This is because handwriting is good evidence that someone actually wrote the letter to express their thoughts and feelings.

Just last week I was cleaning out my things and found a bag and a small cupboard full of letters and memories from my elementary, high school and university days where the internet was unheard of (except when I was in my third year). At the university, the library has an internet port available) and the craze was a beep, not a text message. Mobile phones are huge and heavy with cameras, MMS, GPRS, 3G, touch screen and all these new features.

Dear Friend: A Letter Of Encouragement

As I delve into the little closet, here are a few letters I’d like to share with you.

Letters from my high school friends who I keep in touch with by cell phone, landline, email, social networks, and sometimes over lunch or dinner or coffee. Now you know that the movie New Kids on the Block was a hit when I was in high school.

Long before Palm Pilots, phone organizers, and tablets, I had a Peanut Planner to keep track of my college papers, exams, nights out, and uhmmm dates. (Hahaha!) Yes, my application results for college majors were sent by letter printed on a dot matrix printer.

We are already living in the 21st century and the internet is available at any time. However, writing a letter is always personal and is always worth waiting for. Now it’s either a bank statement or bills in the mailbox. So you can imagine how happy I would be if I got a card from my friend who is a nun in the US with no internet connection or a colorful card from my friends here and abroad. I also enjoy receiving birthday and Christmas cards.

I really love all of these letters (and more in the closet) and yes, I’ve intentionally left the love letters out of this post because the person who wrote them may have a claim to fame. (Hahaha!)

But what if we could do something more powerful? Do you want to write about people who are really different: elderly people in nursing homes, people with immune disorders and more? If the thought of writing a letter to a complete stranger scares you, I’ve got you covered! Below are some great ideas of what you can write.

Taking a few days off work will give you a boost and give you a chance to spend time at home. But for many people, it is already a reality in their everyday lives. Elderly people in nursing homes don’t leave their place of residence as much as you and I, maybe a few outings throughout the year as their highlight. Due to the extra precautions now being taken to protect their physical health, most seniors will have very few visits in the coming months. Loneliness is already very common among the elderly. While I do everything I can to keep them physically healthy, I can only imagine what these measures do to their mental well-being. And while we have plenty of online ways to reach each other (FaceTime, Zoom, etc.), not all seniors are tech savvy.

Writing a letter gets a bit of a distraction from your daily routine. Also, seeing their name on an envelope means that someone is thinking of them – it shows that they are loved! Someone took the time and effort to write them a letter, share a story and let them know they matter. It makes a big impression on a person! And a Skype call might lift someone’s spirits, but a letter is something they can look back on and re-read multiple times. Never underestimate the power of the written word in something. It can calm their nerves and help form tangible memories.

Now: What can I write to someone I don’t know? Below you will find ideas to get you started.

Writing a letter to a stranger may seem intimidating, but once you start, I assure you – the words will flow. My best tip: Write as if you’re starting a conversation with someone in line at the grocery store. Tell them about the weather, what’s going on in your life, or a funny story you read on the Internet. Everything goes!

Although it’s easy to put your worries and frustrations on paper, letters to strangers are acts of kindness: make sure they bring you joy! Write something that will encourage someone in a time of loneliness. Maybe write an inspirational story, recite a poem that inspires you, or share a life lesson. Something that seems small to you can have a big impact on a stranger, so go with your gut.

One thing lonely people often don’t hear is that they matter. That someone is thinking about them. That they are worth it. Seeing these words on paper can reach deep into a person’s heart—and they can be more powerful than hearing them in person. Something about the words on paper makes them real, solidifies them, makes them truer. And as mentioned before, letters can be read over and over again.

Another way to send a letter to a stranger is to write something about yourself! Write about your family and how they make you happy at that moment. What life lessons did you learn? Maybe you’re talking about your own grandparents, what did you learn from them? Reading about someone else’s life can be very disturbing for a lonely person. It allows them to live through your story and gives them hope for the future. However, when you’re talking about yourself, make sure you’re still focusing on the other person: don’t make it all about yourself!

When writing your letter to a stranger, remember: they are strangers! It seems quite logical, but you don’t know where they stand on religion and politics. So it is better to avoid such topics. Some tips for best practices:
