One of the most famous geometric shapes is the triangle. Triangles are identified by the three angles joined by line segments to form a three-sided shape. The two most common triangular shapes used in architecture are equilateral and isosceles.
Triangles are effective tools for architecture and are used in the design of buildings and other structures because they provide strength and stability. When building materials are used to form a triangle, the design has a heavy base and the top on top can handle the weight because of how the energy is distributed through the triangle. This is why many residential buildings have A-frames; it provides a solid structure. The most solid triangles are equilateral and isosceles; their symmetry helps distribute the weight.

The equilateral triangle is by far the most common triangle used in architecture. An equilateral triangle has three congruent sides and angles that measure 60 degrees at each corner. His architectural style included the use of isosceles triangles and other geometric shapes. The eastern building was built on an oddly shaped piece of land. Pei also used an isosceles triangle as the base of the building to fit the shape of the plot. The Flatiron Building in New York City is one of the world’s most innovative skyscrapers. This building is built on a triangular block in Manhattan, giving it a triangular shape, more specifically isosceles. It has stood for over 100 years, showing the strength of triangular architecture.
A scalene triangle is one in which all sides are congruent. Scale triangles are not common in architecture. There is no symmetry in these triangles, which causes uneven weight distribution. This is dangerous because one angle will have more weight and pressure on it than another. Right triangles have an angle that is a perfect 90 degrees. These particular triangles are not traditionally used in the structural features of a building. However, they are essential to the construction and design of the building. Right triangles are used to create perfect corners and straight lines. If the walls and corners of a building lean, the building will also lean.
Triangles are also used as ornaments in architecture, not only in the basic design. In churches, triangular windows are often displayed as window frames or in stained glass, possibly representing the Holy Trinity. The Hearst Tower in Manhattan uses a triangular frame to add additional support to the tower and to frame the window structure entirely in glass; equilateral and isosceles triangles are used.
How To Find The Area Of An Isosceles Triangle (with Pictures)

This exercise consisted of two parts, the first focusing on real triangles and the second on implied triangles.
For this I had to start by drawing a subject which was a real triangle. I thought this was the easiest part of this exercise, but I was having trouble finding a topic. In the end I had to settle for a road sign, hardly a good subject!
Next, we will create two perspective triangles. These are called “real” triangles even though they are only triangular because of the camera angle. First I had to find a motif where I could create a triangle where the lines converge towards the top of the frame. This was not easy to find and yet I am not happy with the subject and the image. Ideally, a tall (thin) building would have been the perfect choice, but there are no such buildings near where I live, so after hours out with the camera I came home and took a picture of my stairs!
Although not the best subject, this shows that if you have two vertical lines and place the camera low down and point up, the effect is that the vertical lines converge in towards the top, giving the impression of a triangle.
Lesson Video: Types Of Triangles: Sides
Next, I created an inverted triangle by placing the camera high and pointing it down on two vertical lines. It is more difficult to find a suitable subject for this, perhaps from the top of a tall building looking down on another tall building opposite would be a use for this, but for the purpose of the exercise I simply used two long vertical wardrobe handles.
This has the opposite effect to the first triangle in perspective, here the vertical lines converge towards the bottom of the frame.
The aim of this part of the exercise was to create triangular shapes from a group of subjects, so that the composition pleases the eye. The first two images were created by placing still life arrangements using five or six objects, one with the front on top and one with the front on the bottom.
By placing a taller object behind the rest, a triangular shape is formed with the point at the top.

Here I placed a taller object at the front of the arrangement with small objects behind, creating a triangular effect with the point at the bottom.
The last part of the exercise was to arrange three people in a triangular format. I didn’t want to use a photo I had taken when doing group portraits as that would have involved contacting old clients to use their photos, and as there are only two of us at home I struggled to find people to used for this. However, these three young men saved me a few minutes after rowing practice one Sunday morning. There was no time to work
