So, what’s the perfect accessory for all this holiday fun? Of course, stupid hat! This easy crochet hat makes a great gift for a new mom or dad and is super quick to make. Even if you are a beginner in knitting, give it a try! The only skills you need to make it are double crochet, circular crochet using a magic loop and stitches. This pattern is for a baby-sized long tail hat. To see additional sizes of this hat, please check this post.

This hat is designed in dark and off-white colors for a vintage effect. If you prefer bright red and white stripes, substitute another color from Karon’s Simply Soft line or another similar weight yarn and it will be perfect!

This baby hat knitting model consists of three parts: the body, the strap and the pom pom. Finally, you sew the pieces together.

A note about the crochet ribbon for this hat: the color change is achieved by simply dropping the color and letting it hang until you need to pick it up again. To change the color, you complete the slip stitch in the old color, then use the new color for chain two and start the next double crochet round with the new color. When you work, this transition looks strange from the outside, but don’t worry. Turn everything inside out before assembling.

Rows 2 – 3: Continue with (R) to stitch dc6 in each row. To complete the row, release and pick up white chain 2.

Rows 4-5: Make 6 double stitches with (W) around each row. Release (W) and take (R)tochain 2 to complete the row.

Rows 6-11: Repeat the steps for rows 2-3 and 4-5, alternating colors like this for the entire body of the hat.

Rows 16 to 27: Add 3 double crochets to each row. In row 27 you should have a total of 42 stitches.

Chapter 7, start the second chapter. Twist and turn the end of the row. Repeat until you have 42 rows. Make sure you don’t twist it, fold it in half and use a mattress stitch or whip stitch to sew the ends of your rows together to create a strip. Knot until finished, leaving a long thread tail. You will use this thread to attach the strap to the body of the hat.

Align the top of the strip with the bottom of the hat body as shown. Sew all around and tie at the ends. Pull the strap down so that the seam is not visible.

When I made this, I chose chunky yarn for the pom pom because I love the way it looks and swings on the long tail of this hat. You can use any yarn you like. 🙂

Cut the string (T) about 7-8 inches long. Take the ball (T) and wrap the thread tightly (but not too tightly) around your hand about 25 times. Pull the thread from the bottom of the thread holder between your third and fourth fingers. Pull tight and tie twice. Tie this tightly and keep your bow tie long – you’ll use it to form the pom-pom and attach it to the hat.

Form pom poms by keeping the longer strands and cut around them into balls. Turn it in any direction and cut it bit by bit. (Learn more about making pom poms by hand here.)

Find the magical ring you created earlier. Place your crochet hook under the magic loop, between the six stitches you made. Pull up one of the long strands with your crochet hook. Secure the long pieces of your yarn with a double knot and then cut to the length of the other strands in your pom pom.

*Mother’s Note – Due to the long tail, placing baby in this hat for naps or when you cannot supervise is not recommended. Hats My husband and I surprised our kids with a trip to Disney for a few weeks and I was hoping to get one of these hats for each of us to take pictures in front of Cinderella’s Castle. I’m going to make each hat a different color, so I’ll share pictures when I finish them. Please tag me on Instagram or Facebook if you make your own!

Wrap your white yarn tightly and evenly around each set of arches. After the first set of bows, tie them off and then wrap your yarn around the second set.

Use your piece of white yarn to tie the pom pom in place. I suggest you double or triple knot.

Use a hot melt glue stick to place the glue stick in the center of the pom pom. This will help prevent it from opening.

I would like to introduce you to Jack William, our first grandchild, born to our son Tanner and his wife Elizabeth. He is calm and happy like this picture.

I’m also really looking forward to making it into something for Christmas! I thought this sleep cap was a great value and also a cute addition to her first newborn photo shoot.

Thank you to so many of you who have knitted with me on my journey to becoming a proper grandmother! How much fun we and the blankets we share. It was a pleasure to be with you. I won’t stop though, I guess I have to warn you that there are many, many, more baby and toddler projects coming your way!
