1. Remind the students of the last time they learned about the things on earth and how they are organized by creating a map. Remind them that they also looked at some maps and learned that maps can teach us different things about different places.

2. Tell the students that they will now learn about continents and oceans by looking at some maps. Ask them to raise their hands to answer the question What is the ocean? What is a continent? Call on some students to share their ideas.

3. Ask the students to sit on the carpet, facing the table. Explain that the ocean is a large body of water on Earth. Explain that there are five major oceans on Earth: the Arctic Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean, the Indian Ocean, the Pacific Ocean, and the Southern Ocean. Hold one of the National Geographic world maps

4. Explain that the continent is like a school and then draw a large rectangle to represent the school. Ask the pupils what is inside the school? Make a list of things inside the school on the board. This list may include classrooms, hallways, libraries, cafeterias, offices, desks, chairs, carpets, flags, pencils, fountains, food, etc.

5. Explain, as a school, that a continent is a large area with many things in it. Like Earth, continents have both living and non-living things on them. However, the continents are the land on earth, where some people live, but people do not live on all continents. Tell the students that they will soon understand why.

7. After reading pages 8 and 9, write the following sentence on the board: “The earth is not as smooth as paper.” Stop and ask the students to explain what this might mean. Discuss the pictures together with text about the earth on pages 8 and 9. Then continue reading the book.

8. When you read the book, you will introduce the students to each of the 7 continents and some of their important aspects. Stop and discuss some of the pictures in the book with the students and let them make comments or ask questions.

9. When you finish reading the book, make a list of the 7 continents on the board and ask the students the following questions:

1. After reading the book, ask the students to go back to their desks and get their social studies notebooks. Ask student volunteers to share the world map model.

2. When each student has a map, ask the students to remember the names of the 7 continents. Write them on the board.

3. Turn on the document camera and make sure the teacher’s blank map of the world is clearly visible.

4. Ask a student to come up and point to the continent of Antarctica. Ask all the other students to point to this continent. Discuss the location and shape of this continent.

5. Color Antarctica blue on the map under the document camera. Ask the students to use one of their crayons to color Antarctica blue.

6. Call on one student to point to one continent at a time and then ask each student to color that continent using the same colored crayon. Repeat this until all the continents on the map are colored.

7. After every continent on the map has been coloured, look at the list of continents on the board and mark Antarctica on the teacher’s map using the black marker. Then ask the students to use their markers to label the name of each continent correctly and tell them that they can also use the list of continents on the board and the classroom map to refer to them.

8. As they label the continents, go around and check that each map is colored and labeled correctly. Help the students who may need extra help and then finish labeling all the continents on the teacher’s map.

9. When there is enough time, ask all students to place their marks. Explain that students who have not completed marking the continents on the map can do so later.

10. Ask each student to come up and show the location of each of the 5 major oceans (Atlantic, Pacific, Arctic, Southern and Indian). Demonstrate how to put ice on the teacher’s map one at a time, and ask students to follow along to mark theirs.

12. Under the document camera, point to the equator on the teacher’s map. Ask the students if they know the name of this line that divides the Earth horizontally. Explain that the line is called the equator and it is an imaginary line that divides the earth into north (above) and south (below). Label the equator on the teacher’s map, and write it out loud as you mark it.

13. Hold up the globe and show the students the equator. Explain that places closer to the equator get more sunlight and retain or store more sunlight than other places, so they tend to be warmer than other places. The closer a place is to the equator, the warmer it is.

14. Point to the first meridian on the teacher’s map while saying the word aloud and ask the students to mark their first meridian. Use the globe to show the students that the Prime Meridian divides the Earth into east and west.

15. Tell the students that the prime meridian and the equator together divide the earth into four regions based on a compass rose. Tell them they will review the compass directions to better understand this concept. Then ask them all to stand up.

16. Guide the students as they point up, down, right, and left to review compass directions – north, south, east, and west.

17. Ask the students to sit again and then demonstrate how to make a rose on the edge of the teacher’s map. Label all instructions.

18. Tell the students that they can finish labeling or coloring the incomplete parts of the map. Ask everyone to double check their work by comparing the map with the map shown under the camera when they have finished labeling everything.

19. As students do their work, move around the room to check their understanding. Take anecdotal notes and help the students as needed.

20. When time is up, ask them to finish their activity and tape the world map sheet in their social studies notebook.

1. Ask the students to turn to a partner to share 3 interesting things they learned about the world map after today’s lesson. After 2 or 3 minutes, ask some students to share one of their answers.

3. Explain that students can answer their questions by creating a website if they wish.

4. Praise the students for their hard work and remind them to think, read and learn about the Earth’s continents and oceans!

5. For homework, have students take it home and share their social studies notebook with a family member or friend. For extra credit, ask them to come up with 1 or 2 fun facts about a continent, ocean, or equator to share during the next social studies lesson.

A) The teacher will observe and listen to the students’ answers during the lesson to see how they can find the different places and how to mark the map.

B) The teacher then collects the students’ interactive social studies notebooks to check their map of the world and their way of thinking in order to understand.
