Since our simple paper bunnies and chicks were so popular, we decided to craft an Easter basket with the same technique, and it’s really fun and easy to make!

The number of strips depends a little on the size of the basket you are making and the width of your strips – you may need more for a larger basket and thinner strips.
Make A Kids Boo Basket To Kick Off Halloween Month
We are working with letter size (A4) blue construction paper that we are cutting.
If you are working with this size, you will need 8 paper strips for the basket, 2 paper strips for the basket hoop, and 1 for the handle – a total of 9 paper strips.
Take the 8 strips of paper you will use to make the basket and gently fold them in half.
There is no need to crease them, which makes the following steps easier to mark the center of the strips.

Take another strip and glue it to the shorter one (half of the strip you cut earlier).
This will create a long strip (paper strip and a half) that we will use to make the basket hoop.
Add glue to the end of one strip and glue to the paper circle. Allow the glue to dry.
Now take the other end of the same paper strip, add glue and stick it to the circle.

We recommend gluing the next pair of paper strips at right angles to the first (again forming a cross).
It’s already starting to look like an Easter basket, just need to add a handle.
You can strengthen the basket with another basket hoop – cut another strip of paper, glue it to the unused half of the strip. Glue it around the basket, on the outside.
Make paper flowers and stick them on the basque, or add a pretty colorful bow or some cute paper chicks and bunnies to stick on the handle.

Although you can use basically any kind of paper for this, I used construction paper. I also used three different colors of paper, but again, you can deviate from this technique if you like.
To start, you’ll want to take your first two colors of paper and cut them into strips 11 inches long and 2 inches wide. You should have 7 strips of each color, for a total of 14. When all the strips are cut, fold them in half hotdog style, so the strips are now about an inch wide. From there, unfold the strips again and fold in the edges of the paper so they line up with the center line. Fold the strip in half again so that your strips are now 0.5 inches wide and firm. Glue the insides to keep them in place.
When doing this, it’s a good idea to take a third color of your paper and cut it into 1-inch wide strips, which I’ll refer to as “wall strips” in this tutorial. Although I made 12 of these 4-inch long strips, in hindsight it may have worked better to tape the strips together so that you have 3 16-inch long strips folded into a closed square shape. Doing so helps hold the basket together, but I personally cannot guarantee that it will work in practice as it does in theory. So, if you don’t mind glue or tape showing on the edges of your box, it’s best to make multiple short strips.
Now you need to take a pencil and ruler and mark two dots on all your 1st and 2nd colored paper strips. The points should be 3.5 inches from the top and 3.5 from the bottom (the end result of the basket will have 3-inch walls, just to give more if extra length is needed).

From here you have to take 4 of each color and line them up, alternating from color 1 to color 2. Then, take the remaining strips (also color-alternate), weave them and from the original set of strips, lining each one. Strip up the pencil marked sections without covering them. Due to the strength of the paper, the strips do not fit perfectly together, which is why you are only using 14 strips and not 16.
When you’re done, the woven side of the strips should be roughly a 4-inch square. The free parts of the strips on each side (9 in wall-in-progress) should now be bent forward. So they all start standing up. It doesn’t matter if they don’t stand perfectly, it will be fixed later.
This is where wall strips come into play. Take the strip and weave it between one side of the wall in progress so that it covers the 1st color strip and shows the 2nd. Make sure the strip meets where the other strips are woven. Once done, first stick the 1st colored strips to the wall strip, then do the same with the 2nd.
Repeat this step with another wall strip woven over the first, this time with the contrasting colors hidden and showing. Then add one more wall strip, going back to the original hide-show pattern. Repeat this for all other wall-in-progress sections

(If you are using squares of wall strips to do this, gluing may be difficult. If so, simply weave the strips onto the walls or glue the top wall strip to others. )
With your walls now finished, finish the box by taking hot glue and running it along the edges of the walls, then glue them together. Another option is to use tape on the inside of the box, but this option is more visible and therefore less recommended.
If you want a handle, it’s pretty easy to add. Simply cut a strip of any of your previous colors, 2 inches wide and 11 inches long. Do the same process as you did with the other strips, fold them in half and fold the edges and then glue them .5 inches wide.
