In the time of the Old Testament, the Bible did not exist as it does today. Although we know how God wants us to live by reading His Word, in the Old Testament God always told people how to live through the teachings of men called prophets. It is important for prophets to follow God’s instructions. Jonah ran away and tried to hide from God. Play hide and seek with your child. When you’re done, talk about how you’re going to find each other. God knows where everyone is. Play with thinking of places we can hide where no one can see us. After you have played for a while, you can read Psalm 139:1-14. You can create gestures to help demonstrate what you are reading, e.g. sit and stand in the first verse.

Talk about obedience and explain that when God tells us to do something, we do it. Talk about times when it’s easy to follow (eating candy) and times when it’s hard to follow (cleaning the room).
Jonah eventually did what God asked him to do, but it wasn’t the first time he was obedient. Create situations like: “Mom asked you to clean your room, but first you play outside and eat a snack, did you comply or not?” It’s always better to follow along quickly and have a good attitude.
Play a game with opponents. Jonas was not only slow to follow, he went in a different direction. Tell how Jonas repented inside the fish. Even though Jonah did the opposite of what God told him, God gave him a second chance when he repented.
When the people of Nineveh heard Jonah preach, they repented. To repent means to be sorry for what you have done wrong and to turn from it and do the opposite. Offer some sins, such as stealing, and then ask the child to think about what they feel will show repentance (such as working and donating to charity).

God forgives sin and fills our hearts with new life when we repent. Use a board and write down some sins. Talk about how dirty the board is. Now wash it and talk about how Jesus cleanses our hearts from our sins. Now write Jesus on the board and talk about how he came to live in the hearts of those who repent and follow him.
Read Psalm 103:12. Pray and thank God that He offers us a way to forgive. Ask Him to help you truly repent.
Make a thin floor board with paper or tape. Let your children walk on the board without falling into the sea. If they fall, shout ‘man overboard’.
Tell how Jonah did not walk the plank but offered to be thrown into the sea because he caused the storm. Remind your children that God is merciful and saved them with big fish.

A simple way to explain repentance to children is to ‘turn away.’ Jonah and the people of Nineveh wandered away from God until God called them to turn.
In this game, the kids have to stay away from you. If you shout ‘repentance’, they must turn away as quickly as possible. The last person to turn was gone.
Create a textured bag with different items. Ask your child to feel the object and explain it. Is it rough, smooth, messy, soft, etc.? Try to include some rough cloth and ashes. Explain how all the people of Nineveh put on these clothes as a sign that they truly repented of their actions.
Wrap several paper people in various household items to try to keep them dry in a bucket of water. Other ideas would be fabric, paper, cling film and silver foil.

Jonah has his own book in the Bible, but the story of Jonah and the big fish can be found in Jonah chapters 1-2.
Paint the paper plate with gray paint. Add sea blue paint and blend the colors together so that the paper plate becomes a mixture of gray and sea blue. Let the paper plate dry thoroughly.

Use glue to attach the triangle to the back of the paper plate. This is the tail. The tip of the triangle should be glued to the back of the plate so that the larger edge of the triangle is further away from the paper plate.
Draw Jonas on white paper. Don’t make him bigger than the mouth of a big fish. I hope you or your son are more artists than me. A stick figure is as good as I can come up with.
Cut a rectangle out of while paper. It should be wide enough for the craft stick to fit.
Glue the rectangle to the back of the large fish near the cutout for the mouth. Be sure to glue only the top and bottom edges of the rectangle strip. Let the glue dry thoroughly.
Paper Plate Whale
Place the wooden craft stick through the rectangle. The big fish will swallow Jonah and spit him out on dry land!
