How To Draw A 6 Sided Shape
Roughly defined, a hexagon is a six-sided polygon, but a regular hexagon has six equal sides and six equal angles. Look at the hexagon image to get a better idea of what you are drawing. In a pinch, consider just tracing an existing hexagon image. Use a ruler and protractor to draw a perfect hexagon. For rougher hexagons, try using a circle shape and a ruler to guide your hand. If precision is not important, you can use a pencil and your creative mind to sketch a simple hexagon.

To draw a hexagon, first trace something round to form a circle. Then use a ruler to draw a horizontal line through the center of the circle. Next, take a ruler and draw an “x” in the circle, dividing it into 6 equal parts. After drawing the “x”, turn each part into a triangle by drawing a straight line between the points along the circle. Finally, erase the circle, the “x” and the horizontal line you drew in the beginning and you’re left with a hexagon! After briefly explaining and modeling the “mathematician’s mission,” I gave each student a record sheet and a wooden sample block. After finding 6 ways to make a hexagon, use the paper pattern block shape to paste the solution.
We were then on the carpet where I had a poster sized version of the record page on the floor. The students take turns using a large foam pattern block to show the path they found.

The kids were amazed when I told them there were 8 ways to make hexagons with our pattern blocks! As we find each of the 8 possibilities, we record the number of each shape used in each creation:
This diagram leads to a great deal of discussion as to why squares and rhombuses don’t work. Even after finding all 8 possibilities I have some students who still insist on being able to use squares and rhombuses and try for another 5 minutes before deciding I must be right. 😉 They also had a great discussion about why the triangle is used so often.
