One of my teammates at IMPACT has a great family tradition for Easter. Every year, her family holds a huge Easter egg hunt where kids and adults go around their yard looking for candy and silver treats – and I think I speak for all of us when I say I’m a little jealous. Easter egg hunts are a tradition primarily for children, but thanks to the Internet and some witty programmers, today adults can participate in their own “Easter Egg” hunts every day. And while it’s getting harder and harder to find with the end of Adobe Flash, we digital marketers are enjoying the traffic and brand awareness benefits. Aside from holidays, Internet Easter eggs are jokes, features or messages hidden by programmers, designers, or developers in the websites and software they build. (That is, what happens when you Google “ask” or “do barrel.”) At first, these little digital secrets were only reserved for techies, but thanks to social media, they are much more common. Internet Easter eggs vary in format (text, visual/sound effects, hidden pages, special features, etc.) and how to find them. They can be as simple or as complex as you want them to be – you can never tell too many people about them. Brands and businesses rarely advertise their Easter eggs. It’s part of the fun of it. Developers may leak information online, but most of the time, users have to “hunt” for it on their own or find each other, and it’s not easy. In 2021, Easter eggs are even harder to discover as Flash was exploited last December as users switch to new browsers and devices. Depending on how an Easter egg is made/encoded or the browser used, it may not be visible to everyone, making these digital treats even more rare and enjoyable. But are there marketing benefits? Kanye West: Source Code Art Kanye West has always fancied himself a lot as an artist, and love him or hate him, it’s hard to argue with the old egg. In 2016, when you visit the Western home page, right-click and click on “View Source,” you will be greeted with a unique and intricate design along with the manufacturer’s name. Just click on the hedgehog in the right corner of the image above the list to see a realistic example of an Easter egg. 8. House & Garden: The next dinosaur is British brand House & Garden. To unlock this now defunct easter egg, users enter the Konami code and receive a random surprise, but Dyna-Mate. Why? I’m not exactly sure. When strategizing your Internet Easter Eggs, make sure it’s on brand and something your audience can relate to. 9. Kickstarter What made this old egg of Kickstarter unique was that it was one of the only products I included in lead generation. Although discontinued, in the past, one could scroll to the bottom of the Kickstarter home page, click on the scissors in the upper left corner, and be blessed with a form. 10. Coca-Cola: Coding Logo In another simple example, in older iterations of its website, you can find the coding logo in the Coca-Cola source code below: 11. Skybet: Look Busy In this funny and unique example, the online sports Betting site, Skybet gave visitors quick facts if their boss caught them on their site during business hours. To find it, users simply had to click the top Facebook button in the row of social icons on the page to be taken to a mock spreadsheet. 12. YouTube: Do the Harlem Shake In another missed but beautiful Easter egg, YouTubers were hit with this fun animation and music if they searched for “Harlem Shake” on the platform. 13. Google: I feel curious In its third appearance on our list, Google tries to prevent boredom by sharing fun facts when you search for “I feel curious.” The information shared can be about anything and everything.
