Jonah In The Belly Of The Whale Craft For Preschoolers
Put this Book of Jonah with other books about whales in the book basket. You can also look for them at your local library. It is a traditional retelling of a classic biblical story.
One day, God asked Jonah to go to the city of Nineveh and tell the people of Nineveh to stop being wicked. Jonas didn’t want to go. He thought it was a dangerous job. So Jonah fled to the sea and boarded a ship to another city.
Then there was a strong wind and a strong storm. Jonah realized that the storm was coming because he was running away from what God asked him to do.
He then told the people in the boat that if they threw him into the sea, God would stop the storm. They threw it and it stopped. They were so grateful that they stood up and thanked God.

Then, the captain and crew looked out over the water and saw Jonah being swallowed by the whale’s mouth straight into the whale’s stomach. God actually sent a whale to take a big drink from Jonah to prevent Jonah from drowning.
Jonah was in the dark belly of the whale for three days and nights. While inside the belly of the fish, he thanked God for saving him from drowning and asked for forgiveness for not going to Nineveh as he was told.
Finally, after the third day, God caused a large fish to spit Jonah onto dry land and God told him to go to Nineveh. He obeyed. I’ve seen many versions of this craft/game over the years, but they always seemed to leave me wanting something… I don’t know… more color I guess. After a long search for the perfect kit I ended up with this and I couldn’t be more pleased. It works well, it’s bright and cheerful, and the kids have a lot of fun with it. It’s easy to change the tool to fit any time and age group you have. For vacation Bible school, when longer activities may be needed, let the children do some of the “Preliminary Preparation” steps below on their own. For Sunday school, when time is short, do more of a project at home and let the kids draw and maybe glue a whale. Likewise, older children can do more than the actual building, and younger children will need to follow the coloring steps. You know your class and your time limits, so I’ll just say, read all the steps carefully, then choose which steps will work best as preparation. and class building for your situation. I have listed below how I do this for a thirty minute project.
1) Print the Jonah template onto T-shirt printable transfer sheets. Jonah is needed for every child.
Outstanding Christian Craft Ideas For Kids
4) Cut around each Jonah leaving a nice edge for glue. Each one should be the exact size you want the bean bag to be. Don’t go too far because if it is too heavy it will be difficult for the whale to catch it.
6) Cut the wire to about 24″ long. One for each child. I have found this to be a good length over the years. The longer the wire, the harder it is to get Jonah to the whale. For the younger ones, 36″ will do the job.
8) Print the whale on white card. One sheet (or 2 whales) is needed for each child. Use a black and white template if the children are drawing their own whales. Use a color template if time does not allow them to paint their own colors.
9) Since I’m always running out of time in my class, I let them use a color model and cut out a whale OR I cut out a whale from a black and white model and they can color them. We don’t have time to cut and paint during Sunday school hours.

1) Give each child a hat, a Jonah bean bag with string, a left and right whale, and a marker.
2) Have the children color their Jonah (and whale, if possible) with crayons. The whale can be colored with anything but Jonah’s fabric works best with markers.
3) When they finish coloring, take the hat and whale to the teacher to pin. Using a hot glue gun, glue the whale on each side of the hat with the mouth of the whale facing the large door of the hat. I don’t recommend using Elmer’s glue or similar because kids will want to play with the game right away and that type of glue doesn’t dry fast enough. Using hot glue allows the game to start in seconds.
4) Finally, ask the children to thread the free end of the thread through the top of the hat. Tie a large knot at the end of the thread to secure it. Look carefully at the figures below. See the stitching on the hat? This stitch allows knitting without a needle. If your hats are constructed differently, a larger yarn needle can be used. Just make sure it has a blunt end if children are using it.
