There are tons of great stencil designs to choose from today, but sometimes you just can’t find the perfect stencil for the project you have in mind.

Maybe you want to make a custom template for your wedding decorations. Maybe you want to recreate that gorgeous patterned floor you saw in a magazine. Or maybe you have a super original idea in mind.

Of course, you can always use a Cricuit or Silhouette cutter to make reusable stencils, but luckily, it’s still easy to DIY stencils even if you don’t have one. All you need are some very inexpensive supplies. (If you already have a Circuit and want to use it, I find this tutorial on creating templates with Circuit pretty comprehensive.)

In this post, I’ll share simple step-by-step instructions, helpful tips and tricks, and a video tutorial to make this project super easy to do yourself.

Before I start, I want to point out that sometimes making a template might not be the best option. If you’re planning a DIY project that you’ll only do once, it’s best not to use a template and just do a simple transfer.

If you don’t know how to make a pencil transfer, I have step-by-step pencil transfer instructions that you can check out. It’s very easy, all you need is a pencil or chalk.

Using transfers is much faster than creating templates that are only used once. Templates are best when you plan to use the same design multiple times, such as when using the same design for multiple marks, or when using a template to create a repeating pattern.

When choosing a design for your template, it’s best to choose something less detailed. Something with a lot of clean lines is easier to use and easier to use as a template. Very small details are often lost when making templates.

Also remember that templates will only show the outline of your design; details within the image will be difficult to include.

After choosing a template design, you can print it. Make sure you print it the same size as the template you want to finish.

(You can also make stencils with a variety of designs, including things from magazines, book covers, and even photos.)

You have to be careful with some letters that have small circles and other shapes in between. Typically, stencils use a small connecting line to connect the inner shape to the rest of the stencil.

If you simply cut the letters without those lines, the small internal shapes are lost and your stenciled text will be difficult to read. When planning your template design, remember to include these lines. You can see some examples below.

You can easily make those template lines disappear when you’re done creating your project template. Just use a small brush or toothpick and fill in the small spaces of the letters with paint.

I highly recommend using thin, clear plastic for your templates. You can buy stencil blanks in various sizes for very reasonable prices on Amazon or at craft stores. Although we haven’t used Cricuit or Silhouette to create our templates, their template blanks still work well.

You can also use adhesive vinyl to make your stencils, but mylar plastic works best if you plan to use the stencil multiple times.

I do not recommend using cardboard or cardboard for templates. In general, I’m careful to be frugal and use what you have, but it’s hard to get nice, clean lines with cardboard templates, especially if you plan to use it multiple times.

Plastic adheres better to the surface you are stenciling on, stops paint from seeping down, and never gets wet. In general, it just gives better results.

Place the plastic on your design. Try not to place the template pattern too close to the edge of the plastic. When you’re stenciling, having a little extra plastic around the edges will help keep you from accidentally getting paint where you don’t want it.

Tape the design to the plastic so it doesn’t move as you work, then carefully trace the design onto the plastic.

Place the plastic on a cutting mat. (Don’t forget the cutting mat, or you might end up carving the stencil into the table!)

Make sure your craft knife has a sharp blade so you can easily cut through the plastic. This will help ensure you get nice, clean lines.

Use your craft knife to very carefully and slowly trace along the lines of your design. You may need to go through some areas twice to cut through the plastic completely; make sure you follow exactly the same line.

No matter where you cut the line, using a ruler will help keep the line perfect.

If you are making stencils with a repeating pattern to use on walls or floors, adding registration marks will make your stencil project very, very easy.

Registration marks are guides to help you perfectly line up your templates for a seamless repeating pattern.

It’s easy to add them to your templates. Once you have traced a complete stencil design onto your plastic, move your paper pattern to where the next repeating design begins.

Trace some elements/stencil lines on your plastic and cut them out. When you stencil print, you can line up these lines with the previous section you stenciled to keep everything evenly spaced and straight.

When you’re done cutting the template, if you notice anything that isn’t quite smooth or straight enough, you can always go back and clean up those parts with your utility knife.

I hope to use this template for a future project, but for now I just made a sample table from the template to get an idea of how it would look.

Below is another example of a DIY template I made; I have made some DIY signs with this and it works great.

The stenciling itself is easy, but there are a few things you need to know to get clean, perfect stencil lines. If you haven’t made many stencils before, I have another post about materials and tips for perfect stencils.

I have also prepared a Youtube video of this project for those who like videos. You can watch it below. I’ve had my hands full this week with a complex modeling project and my eye is crossing and wondering why I’m doing this to myself. I need a break, so let’s talk about how to create your own custom templates. Template making instructions, tips and tools for models…

Remember when I told you I was doing a budget remodel (under $100) for half of my bathroom? Do not?

I painted the walls, installed a new light fixture and even removed the doors to make the space easier to work with. I was sailing when I was everywhere and my house was hit by the Black Death. Okay, that might be a bit of an exaggeration, but everyone in the family has been battling the flu for the past month.

Of course we don’t do it all at once, we politely take it in turns to make it a good and consistent family experience.

The good news is that we are all back to health, but the bad news is that my initial excitement and adrenaline rush to flush the toilet is long gone. My motivation levels have fluctuated between “zero care” and “I’ll do it tomorrow”.

Well, except my Hubs keeps sweetly reminding me (in his most annoyed voice) that the bathroom still doesn’t have a door, and I kindly remind him (in my most annoyed voice) that he never closes the door anyway . That made me about an hour before the blinding started again.

Slowly getting back to work, last week I started making stencils to help me transfer geometric patterns to the walls. The design work is a pain, but the actual template creation part is easy and fun.
