511 Tactec Plate Carrier Review – Mission Gear 5.11 TacTech Plate Carrier: One of the lightest and best plate carriers you can find
When I first started looking for a plate carrier I was overwhelmed with all the options currently on the market. These days there are many companies that make plate carriers with different options and features. I primarily use my plate carrier for working out and training range. When I first saw the 5.11 TacTech Plate Carrier, I was intrigued by both the features and the price, so I ordered one online. Upon receiving the pickup I was immediately impressed with the build quality. The best feature in my opinion is the very comfortable shoulder straps that are adjustable and allow for the routing of comm wire and/or hydration tubes. The straps are wide and have a good amount of padding to keep you comfortable while wearing the plate carrier for long periods of time.
511 Tactec Plate Carrier Review
The plate carrier is made of 500D nylon and can accommodate various sizes of armor plates including the most popular sizes (12.5H x 9.5L and 13.25H x 10.25L). The front and back panels are covered with 9 rows of MOLLE webbing high and 8 rows wide, the top 6 rows are laser cut and the bottom 3 rows are traditional nylon webbing. I personally like that the vest is 8 rows wide and is able to accommodate more bags compared to the industry standard of 6 rows wide. The top 6 rows of MOLLE on the front and back are covered with velcro to connect different patches. The front has a built-in organizer pocket, which is a good size with plenty of storage.

5.11 TacTech Plate Carrier has a quick and easy way to adjust, which is the best feature since you have to weave the cable to adjust the size of the cummerbund and shoulder covers. You can choose to release an entire carrier or just one group depending on your needs. The release handle is stored on the outside of the carrier or inside the top of the front of the carrier depending on your preference. There is a bone style cummerbund made of 500D nylon with bungee material woven into it.
The cumberbund has 3 mole rows and the length varies depending on how you measure it. Because of the design you can carry your bags vertically or horizontally and on the outside or inside of the cummerbund. On the back of the carrier is an emergency pull handle that opens when pulled, allowing your friend to pull you to safety while you can stand in a more vertical position.
Overall I think the 5.11 TacTech Plate Carrier is a great product, especially for the price and features included. The only improvements I would see needed would be if the cummerbund had a more rigid material built in to add support. Getting the dishes into the carrier is kind of an annoying process because of the velcro straps inside, but the straps allow for carrying different types of dishes. The plate carrier only comes in one size but I don’t find it suitable for a small frame person, especially when combined with a police type belt type.

First and foremost the Tactec Plate Carrier is extremely comfortable. It fits well, doesn’t bounce too much, breathes and isn’t too heavy. During testing, the vest stayed comfortable and cool during 4-mile runs, gym sessions, and long rides. The comfort of TacTec plate carriers comes from a combination of features. 5.11 added large sections of padding on the inside of the carriers. Between these sections of padding are air channels that allow body heat to dissipate. The pads do their job well, keeping the vest snug and comfortable without rubbing too much or getting in the way. Airflow channels between the pads help keep operators cool and dry as airflow helps sweat to evaporate. Large padded shoulders add comfort by helping to distribute the load evenly across the front and back of the shoulders. Although the shoulder pads are large enough to distribute the weight, they do not prevent the shooter from carrying their primary weapon system in a shoulder bag. TacTec offers adjustable sizes from XS-XL and can accommodate medium or large ballistic plates. This allows the end user to easily customize the vest based on their needs and preferences. The modular fit also promotes enhanced range of motion, allowing the operator to move unhindered through their equipment. A small but appreciated feature is the velcro inside the vest to secure it to prevent the tabs from hanging on other gear. Such attention to small details is important. TacTec Plate Carrier supports SAPI plates and men’s and women’s weight plates from Rogue Fitness.
The TalkTech Plate Carrier has all the features required for a plate carrier used in the field. It has a quick release system that can be deployed with one hand. It features a brake handle to assist in emergency evacuation. TacTech Plate Carrier is made from abrasion resistant 500D nylon that is treated with a water resistant coating for a durable finish to give the vest a long shelf life and to prevent water retention that adds weight.
Other features of the TacTec plate carrier worth mentioning include lots of Velcro on the front and back for an ID or part badge or your favorite character patch. Built in pocket on the front chest of the upper right ring. And depth to hold target documents, maps, phone or other types of gear. One downside of the TacTec is that it doesn’t come with side pockets. However, 5.11 does make crossbody bags that you can buy separately. The side pockets are the same colors as the TalkTech plate carrier, except for the MultiCam. Strictly speaking, side pockets were not part of the testing and evaluation of this article so cannot provide definitive feedback on this.
