Moses And The Burning Bush Craft – As kids, you may have felt busy doing something when suddenly a parent or other responsible adult asks you to drop everything and help them with something. Being asked to take on new or additional responsibilities can be difficult for anyone from child to adult. In times like these, it means letting the world know you have some help and support available. So it was with Moses. Moses was busy tending his sheep when he saw a strange sight – a burning bush on a mountain. When he went to investigate, he was surprised to hear a voice telling God to bring his message to Egypt and release the Israelites. Moses thought he had too much work to do, but with God’s help and support he accomplished his goal.
Every time you look at the light of your burning bush collage, remember that no matter where you are or what is happening in the world around you, God’s love is always with us. God always hears us when we talk to him, and even if we don’t get the answer we expect, we can always take comfort in knowing that God hears us and loves us.

Directions: Using a permanent marker, draw branches on the outside of a vase or jar to look like branches of a shrub. Cut tissue paper into small pieces. Put some glue on a plate. Use a children’s paint brush to mix some water into the glue and paint on the tissue paper pieces. They can line the inside of a cup or jar with tissue paper until the container is completely covered. Place a tea light or activated glow stick inside. The first 15 minutes of our 45-minute class on Sunday mornings are dedicated to exploration stations that connect with our big idea. Our Moses unit is no different!
Books about Moses are displayed on the top shelf of our library station, making it easy for our little readers to read while curled up against a pillow!
Week 1: Baby Moses Hands down, our Float the Nile game was our favorite this week! This was a great comprehension exercise for our front-readers and they loved “swimming” their baby Moses! ,
Week 2: The Burning Bush This week, we learned that God is so powerful that He can use a burning bush to speak to us!

I wasn’t sure how well my 3 and 4 year olds would do with a traditional tissue paper craft, but they did great! Even my little boys were able to do it once I showed them! They loved it and begged for more pieces to douse their flames!
Weeks 3 and 4: The Plagues It took us two weeks to talk about the plagues of Egypt… even though my SS course guide said one week. So much to pack into one week! The first week, we talked about all insects, but focused on frogs!
I totally thought I had the frog stickers too and was horrified when I realized I didn’t. So, at the last minute, I punched out green construction paper for the fake frogs. Yes… everyone laughs! Like having a real frog on the table or something! Sometimes our plan B is just as good or better, right? ,
During the second week of the pandemic, we took note of Pharaoh’s stubbornness and saw how far God’s power went to save his people… God will never leave us! We matched the pictures with the words. I predicted circles for him to speed it up. And we were tasked with finding the first letter of words to help us match the pictures!

Week 5: Red Sea We had so much fun with our Red Sea crafts! When I had everything set up, they painted Moses. Then, I added glue stick glue to the “path” part of the picture and the kids poured sand over each one. We put the extra back in the sand container and saved our dry land!
Then we used puffy paint (equal parts of shaving cream and Elmer’s glue and blue food coloring) to paint the red sea walls on either side of our dry land!
Week 6: In the last week of reading the 10 Commandments to Moses, we learned how God used his power to speak to the Israelites and write with his finger on the stone tablets! An easy craft for this theme has been around for a long time. Sometimes the old, well tested are the best. I love that it can cross the ages by changing the style of the flames.
(I know it sounds tempting, but don’t use your fabric rotary cutter for this. Buy a rotary cutter for paper. Both cutters will last longer and work better if you use one for fabric and the other for dedicate to the paper. Let me know.)

2. Cut tissue into 9″ x 9″ squares with a rotary cutter. Each child will need one square of each color.
Class Instructions: 1. Ask each child to draw and color a bush out of a cup.
For young children (Kindergarten): Apply the tissue in yellow, orange and red, placing the corners in alternate directions.
For a little older (grades 1 and 2): Ask them to tear the paper into pieces and stick them inside the cup.

For older kids (3rd and up): Let them cut flame shapes around the edges of each tissue.
