Current Events Report

Current Events Report – Writing reports on current events is a proven educational approach for students to relate to non-fiction. There are many formats that current events reports can take, but not all of them can be aligned with the Common Core Standards for reading news text. That’s why I rotate the following five standards-based formats when mapping current events reports.

Writing a report on a current event is a great way for students to practice identifying the main idea and supporting details presented in a text. In order for the students to form the main idea, they should read the article in its entirety. After reading the article and identifying the main idea, it’s time for students to sort out important details. Asking students to choose three details that support the main idea narrows the options. I find that most students quickly write an article in their own words, but the Common Core standards for reading informative text require more than a strict summary. Ideally, students will have a better understanding of the text after identifying the main idea and supporting details.

The Text Connections Current Event format allows students to demonstrate their ability to integrate information by making three different types of connections to the text. Making text connections is an active reading strategy that, when used with differentiation and scaffolding, can lead to increased reading comprehension. By connecting the article to yourself, other texts and the world, you strengthen your understanding of the information presented in the article. First, the students relate the text to something in their lives. Thoughts, experiences, family, friends and school are common connections students can make when they relate an article to their own sphere of influence. The students then match the article about the current event with another known text. I want to encourage students to think of other books, characters, poems, articles, websites, and blogs that might relate to what they chose for their essay on the current event. Linking them to other texts on current events enhances understanding of both publications. Finally, the students relate the text to their world. Television, movies, events, games, news and pop culture are examples that contain everyday messages that students can relate to.

Book Report/current Event Guidelines

Current events reports are a great way for students to work with level 2 and 3 vocabulary. Instead of explaining difficult words, students are asked to find and define them. I encourage students to first try to define academic language using context. If this is not possible, students should be able to use a dictionary for additional support. The Common Core Standards for Reading Informational Text implicitly state that students can identify and define academic vocabulary. Asking for the identification of vocabulary terms is part of reporting the current event, as is a lot of practice when unfamiliar words occur during independent reading.

Another common core standard that current events reporting can address is the distinction between fact and opinion. The ability to distinguish between fact and opinion helps students develop critical and analytical skills in both reading and listening. Beginning with the specific evidence presented in the article, students identify five different facts. Students can then use their knowledge of the facts to form and share their own opinions. Asking students to express their own views lays the groundwork for recognizing the ideas presented in the text.

Teaching students summarizing is easier said than done. Many students who are asked to write a summary try to copy the entire text. Summarizing is a skill that must be learned and practiced over time. An effective method of teaching students to summarize nonfiction involves basic information gathering skills. By locating and writing down the 5Ws (who, what, when, where, and why) in the text, students can identify key information that forms their summary. Students use the information from the 5Ws to write a short summary of a news article, report on a major current event that meets Common Core standards for reading news text, and write summaries.

Reporting on current events in five different formats will equip your students with the skills needed to master the Common Core Standards. While each format requires a fundamental foundation of understanding, the results and practice will reinforce students’ basic knowledge of informational text.

A Learning Journey: Schoolhouse Review: God’s World News (early Edition)

During the school year, each of my children is assigned to write weekly current affairs reports. I want them to know what’s happening in the news and how to gather information from different sources to form their own opinion. This is becoming increasingly difficult due to political tensions and social unrest.

The assignment is a little different for my high school boys than it is for my high school daughter. I expect the students at my school to do more research on the topic to form their own opinions rather than accepting the opinion of one news outlet. After last year’s highly publicized incident regarding the confrontation of the Covington children at the Lincoln Memorial, my son learned the importance of considering multiple sources.

My daughter will take a more nuanced view of news and stories that are not as politically oriented. To choose a topic, I see a standard news site with it. He has always enjoyed youth sites that are less about current events and more about news about his interests. For example, last year he found a fascinating article about a rarely seen wild cat in Africa. His reports this year alternate current affairs and interest-oriented news. He uses news coverage and current events forms to support his conclusions as he continues to write longer accounts.
