How To Draw A Block Letters
Here are some exercises to help you “see” or visualize letters, which are not only LETTERS, but also SHAPES. Take these ideas, run with them, play with them and try them out with different pens.

I draw a lot of letters… unique letter variations, alphabets, doodles and designs. These are great exercises to improve your line drawing skills and learn what each pen can do.

1. Let’s start with the VISION exercise and we will work with loose lines, just to practice, we will use positive and negative space as a guide. Use a pen so you can’t erase the lines.

2. Use a ruler to draw horizontal and vertical lines on the index card. Make the boxes slightly vertical [think portrait instead of landscape] instead of square. My grates are about 1/2″ wide, but that’s just an estimate. They’re not measured!
3. Now try to imagine the boxes as “houses” for your printed letters! We turn these boxes into letters by filling [loosely, just for the idea] the space around the letters. In other words, the back of the letters. This is called negative space. If you do this, the letter itself will remain in the box. If you can’t see the letters appear, try squinting or holding the paper away from you. Think of your letters as physical shapes you can hold – puffed cookie dough or wooden blocks! Try different methods to create the shape of the leaf.
4. In my video I make the English alphabet. The challenge is to revise uppercase letters A-Z and lowercase letters a-z. Note that some letters, like O|o or Z|z or C|c, are basically the same as uppercase and lowercase, just different sizes. And some are completely different, like A|a and H|h and I|i. I make sans serif block letters [these letters have no serifs].
5. Play with standard variations, for example lowercase “_______𝑎” a. Or “ℊг” lowercase g. Draw 26 uppercase letters and 26 lowercase letters. Then work through the numbers 0-9. There are a total of 62 letter forms! This is your homework for this week. Or try a different alphabet!

2. Draw each capital letter of the alphabet as a printed letter on an index card as you lead the video [in pen]. Use a pen so you can’t erase the lines.
3. If a letter gives you trouble, just continue the alphabet and start over. Gradually, drawing some letters will become easier and more natural. Continue the alphabet. The hardest thing for me when I was learning: the letters G, Q, S and small __.
5. You can also paint printed letters! Here the letters a-b-c are painted with ink and a small brush. It takes time for the brush strokes to become even, so it will be difficult to get the ink or paint to flow smoothly at first, but keep practicing!

2. For this exercise, I cut my index cards in half and put 1-2 letters on each card. This would also be a fun way to pronounce a word! Draw the lower and upper case versions. In these examples, I’m using Sharpie water-based poster paint markers, Sakura moonlight Gelly Rolls, and regular Sakura Gelly Rolls. Ok, in the image above I have given 3 different examples of shading the letters. Whatever you do, keep it consistent. If all the darker shadows are on the sides of the letter of one letter, make sure all the sides of the letters are darker. If all the shadows are at the bottom of a letter, make sure all the letters show it. However, the letter looks three-dimensional if the shading is consistent.

In the third row, the lighting comes from above and to the right… just like the top row, the lighting is slightly higher and to the right.
With these letters, add a shadow to the left and below each edge. This gives a realistic 3-dimensional appearance.
This is much more complicated than the previous two examples. As can be seen from example ‘F’ above. You need to rotate the shadow letter down and diagonally to the right. In the examples, the first shadow is when the letter was at an angle, so the shadow is at a smaller angle than the second letter in each example. The second example for each letter is a letter on a table or flat surface. Use each example to help you draw these shadows. After drawing these shadows, try them on your own 3D letters.
