You may be wondering why teaching poetry to children is beneficial. I ask why not? Children are never too young to be exposed to poetry. I have childhood memories of my father reading poems to me every night, and I still clearly remember the poems and how they made me feel. Poetry allows us to have new experiences and make sense of our feelings. It can connect children to literature that other resources cannot. Studying poetry turned a hardworking reader in me into a literature lover who still actively reads, shares, and teaches poetry today.
Autobiographical Poem Examples
Poetry teaches children to visualize and experience things in their imagination. Poetry aimed at children often rhymes and is fun to read. It is essential and can be used to teach children to read, write, listen and speak. Singing poems with a class can be an enjoyable experience. I teach another poem of the week that we read over and over to develop our reading skills. We discussed the lyrics and how they make us feel and what thoughts they evoke. Bio Poems For President’s Day
For kids who may find creative writing difficult, poetry writing helps with that. The poems follow patterns and have a structure that children need and find comforting. It can be an introduction to different styles of writing after building confidence through writing poetry. It also allows children to develop their vocabulary, vocabulary and grammar.
Before diving into teaching a particular style of poetry writing, I like to share poems from my favorite children’s children’s poetry. I have poetry collections on display by authors Shel Silverstein, Jack Prelutsky, Denis Lee and many others. My absolute favorite children’s poem of all time is Alligator Pie. I learned this as a young man and taught it to my class every year.
To start our biopoetry writing class, I read a book by Jamie Lee Curtis called “Today I Feel Silly & Other Moods That Make My Day”. This book is excellent for extracting vocabulary from character traits. We share our connections and brainstorm the different words on a chart.
To teach children the style and manner of writing biopoetry, I created an anchor board that we could complete together. We went line by line, giving and sharing ideas with our neighbors on the mat and then orally to the class. I wrote down an idea as an example. This chart is useful for students who need extra support with their writing.
The Dehumanization In The Poems
Students are given a blank planning sheet to write their bio poem. They write about themselves at the table using the template below. This template is available for free at the end of the post.
Before introductory activities, stories, and examples are provided, students are relatively confident and independent when writing their poetry drafts. For a lot of writing with young children, a rough draft is usually enough, but with poetry, I like having a way to write a polished, edited piece and create a canvas.
As a display of our bio poem, we rewrote our poem on a piece of white board folded to look like an envelope. To create the same look, cut large squares from thicker cardstock and fold the corners inward. Students are taught to use a ruler to draw straight lines of appropriate length. They copy your edited poems into the lines inside the envelope form.
After rewriting their poems, they trace their authorship with fine markers. They decorate the outside of the envelope mold with designs of their creativity.
Types Of Poem
When they are on the bulletin board, it creates a unique view. The bio poetry writing exhibition is titled ‘Who I Am!’ and invites readers to take a closer look inside.

10 6. Cinquain A five-line poem Line 1: a word (subject or noun) Line 2: two adjectives describing line 1 Line 3: 3 action verbs related to line 1 Line 4: 4 words (a whole sentence) that relates to line 1 Line 5: A word that sums up the entire poem

7. Haiku a type of poem that developed from Japan and is based primarily on nature. It is usually a three-line poem, with the first line containing 3 syllables, the second line 7, and the third line 5. The Haiku poem example should make your concept clear. 12 8. Limerick a 5-line poem. The last words of the first, second and fifth lines rhyme and the last words of the third and fourth lines rhyme. That’s how poetry works.
9. Rhyming Poems Rhyming is a type of poetry with a rhythmic pattern and flow in the form of couplets, triplets, and quatrains. Sample ‘Couplets’ Blink, twinkle little star How I wonder what you are! ‘Triplets’ All I could say, I was happy and joyful as it is the month of May.
