Sensory play with the 5 senses Teaching children about the 5 senses is very important to teach them about their environment, to gain awareness of new things and senses and to open a new world of learning. After all, when we talk about sensory activities, we don’t just mean different textures for your hands! Sensory activity should include smell, sight, hearing and taste. Engaging all five senses helps children understand and remember the learning activities they are doing and is a great way to teach them more about the world around them. RELATED: 52 Weeks of Sensory Activities RELATED: Free Breakfast Activity Printable Sensory Play for Picky Eaters Learning about the 5 senses and using the 5 senses for sensory play is especially important for Picky Eaters. After all, trying and learning to like new food is not about how to taste everything. Sight: Babies see the food with their eyes and decide immediately if they are going to try the food as well. Smell: If a food smells “off” or unexpected, children may refuse to try it. Touch: If a food feels strange in their hands or in their mouth, children may not even try it before tasting it. Hearing: Yes, hearing also affects the way our children eat! From hearing his siblings complain that they don’t like his food, to the too crunchy sound when his parents cut his food. Taste: Of course, the taste of food has a big impact on whether picky eaters will like it or not. And it’s not just children who judge food with their five senses, adults too. This is why it is so important to introduce sensory play that uses all five senses to expose children to new sights, smells, textures, sounds and tastes through fun and ‘safe’ sensory play, instead of having them eat something again food on the table, which can be so scary for children. This 5 senses printable activity is a great way for kids to talk about their senses and talk about how different things feel, smell, sound, look and taste… all without the pressure of sit down to dinner at the table and have a new “not favorite” food on their plate. RELATED: 3 Sensory Tricks for Kids to Eat Sensory Tasting Activity I wanted to point out a page I like from the Five Senses worksheet: The Tasty Test on page 4. Use it as a template to test the taste of new food! Make activity information a fun game or experience without pressure to eat food. This activity has several objectives: Introduce children to new foods and flavors. Show children that it is okay to try new foods and that there is no pressure to eat the food. Teach children to describe the flavors of food. Instead of saying “delicious” or “delicious” you can learn words like “bitter” “sweet”, “salty” “sour” and any other taste you want to present!
