If your students are not familiar with building a swan, you may want to walk them through the steps before writing. The Snowman Freeze Song takes children through the process of building a snowman and gets kids moving. This is a fun activity to do before writing or for a brain break.

Then fold the paper vertically in half. Open it and then fold it in half horizontally. Open again. Now there should be vertical and horizontal layers in the middle.
Then cut along the horizontal line on the right side of the swallow. Stop cutting in the middle of the paper.

Well, I don’t know where you live, but I’ve seen a lot of people posting about snow days! I live in Phoenix and it’s in the 70’s! Now I’m loving the warm weather, but at the same time I think I’ll enjoy a snow day. To make up for missing school days, I brought snow days to the classroom! In this post, you’ll find five ideas you can do in your classroom to make snow day fun! This post contains an Amazon affiliate link.
Having fun crafts is a great way to show your students that they are unique and different. I like this project because I give the students gloves, a hat, and hands, but then they can create the rest of the snow. They can add their own faces, scarves, buttons and it all comes out really cute! I used leftover Christmas wrapping paper to hang the display, with a cute poem from First Grade Adventures in the Jungle in the middle!
Another great hall display is the snowy glyph! I love these because they are again personalized to each student, but let them express their creativity! Then you can have the students draw the results as well, so they know how to read the glyph. You can get it for free from TPT here.

In Math Center, my students build a snowman by answering a variety of questions to assemble the parts of the snowman. I post different class cards around the class so they can stand up and move around. Circling is one of my favorite parts of any station, so they don’t just sit in their seats all the time, but they’re moving around while they’re working on things!
Linking writing to your snow day is a great way to get creative with procedural writing! Students learn how to make a snowman in four easy steps! They can customize it by saying what they will do to make their snowman unique or what they will add to the snowman. You can get this incredibly sophisticated printer from Creative Classroom.
A classroom snowball fight with these awesome snowmen from Amazon would be a great way to add some fun and exercise to your snow day. You can use this to play dodge ball and it won’t hurt your students. Another snowball trick I play in math class is to have students write a math problem on a piece of paper. Then we broke the paper and they threw it in the classroom. Then they answered the questions on the registration sheet, which was another way to practice math facts. You can do this with any flashcard or math concept you’re looking at at the time.
What would you do in your classroom to celebrate Snow Day?! I’d love to hear what else you do!

Idea. Each student receives a snowflake template (free printable here) and LOST! a piece of snowflake paper (free printable here). Discuss with your students that each snowflake and snowman is different. I told my children that God made snowflakes as unique as he made each one of them
