Jonah & The Big Fish Ready Set Find
Place this book of Jonah in a book basket with other books about whales. You can also find them at your local library. It is a traditional retelling of a classic biblical story.
One day God told Jonah to go to the city of Nineveh and tell the people of Nineveh to stop being wicked. Jonah didn’t want to go. He felt that this was a dangerous mission. So Jonah fled to the sea and boarded a ship bound for another city.
Then, there was a great wind and a violent storm. Jonah realized that the storm was happening because he was running away from what God told him to do.
Next, he told the people on the boat that God would stop the storm if they threw him into the sea. They threw it away and it stopped. They were so grateful that they stopped and thanked God.

Then, the captain and crew looked into the water and found Jonah swallowed in the whale’s mouth, right in the whale’s belly. God actually sent a whale to take Jonah’s great blow to save him from drowning.
Jonah stayed in the dark belly of the whale for three days and three nights. While he was in the belly of the fish, he thanked God for saving him from drowning and apologized for not going to Nineveh as he had been told.
Finally, after the third day, God caught a big fish and scared Jonah onto dry land and God told him to go to Nineveh. He obeyed. Throughout the Old Testament, God called people to share His message with others. These messengers are called prophets. The story of such a prophet is found in Jonah.
During Old Testament times, the Bible did not exist as it does today. Although we know how God tells us how to live by reading His Word, in the Old Testament God often tells people how to live through the teachings of men known as prophets. God entrusted them with a message to tell others. Name some other Old Testament prophets.
Jonah And The Whale Sunday School Lesson Plan
It was important for prophets to obey God’s instructions. Jonah ran away and tried to hide from God. Play a game of hide and seek with your child. After you finish, talk about how the two of you find each other. God knows where everyone is. Play a game thinking of places where we can hide where no one will find us. After you have played for a while, you can read Psalm 139:1-14. You can make gestures to help explain what you are reading e.g. Sit and stand in the first verse.
He talked about obedience and explained that if God says we need to do something, we have to do it. Talk about times when it’s easy to follow (eating dessert), and times when it’s hard to follow (cleaning the room).
Jonah finally did as God commanded, but it was not the first time he had obeyed. “Mommy told you to clean your room, but first you play outside and eat breakfast, did you obey well?” It is always good to obey immediately and with a good attitude.
Play the game of opponents. Jonah not only obeyed, but went in another direction. Talk about how Jonah repented inside the fish. Although Jonah did the opposite of what God said, when he repented God gave him a second chance.
Ready, Set, Find
When the people of Nineveh heard Jonah preach, they repented. Repentance means to be sorry for what you have done wrong and to turn away from it and do the opposite. Offer some sin, such as stealing, and then make the child repent (such as working and donating to charity.)
When we repent God forgives sin and fills our hearts with new life. Use the whiteboard and write some sins. Talk about how dirty the whiteboard is. Now clean it up and talk about how Jesus cleanses our hearts from our sins. Now write Jesus on the whiteboard and talk about how He dwells in the hearts of those who repent and follow Him.
Read Psalm 103:12. Pray and give thanks to God who gives us the way of forgiveness. Ask Him to help you truly repent.
Create a thin plank on the floor using paper or tape. Let your kids walk down the plank without falling overboard. If they fall in, shout ‘man over-board’.

He talked about how Jonah did not walk on planks but offered to cause a storm and be thrown into the sea. Remind your children that God was kind and saved them from the big fish.
An easy way to explain repentance to children is to ‘turn.’ Jonah and the people of Nineveh were turning away from God, until God called them to turn.
In this game the children must move away from you. When you shout ‘repent’, they want to turn around as fast as possible. is the last person to turn on.
Make a tissue bag with different items. Ask your child to feel the object and explain it. Is it rough, smooth, messy, soft and so on? Try incorporating some rough cloth and ashes. He explained how all the people of Nineveh wore these clothes as a sign that they were truly sorry for their actions.
