Personal Timeline – In my last blog post, Top 10 Lists: Using Memories to Change Your Life, we discussed how to identify common themes in top 10 memory lists. This list will be useful for life timeline events
Like a Top 10 list, a life timeline helps us find common themes among the things we remember most, but in a visual way.
Personal Timeline
Draw a horizontal line on paper and plot the years on this line in increments of 2 to 5 years. It is the foundation of your lifetime
How To Change Your Past, Create Your Timeline Step One
Next, plan for neutral (blue) life events in the middle, such as moving, the birth of a family member, or starting college.
As with your list of top 10 memories, identify common themes that cut across different memories with a bird’s eye view.
Now that you’ve thought about the themes and patterns of the times in your life, draw a picture of times in your life that have positive or negative emotions. What two or three words would you use to describe these times?
The Life Timeline allows us to visualize our most important memories extending through our lives, connecting them to generations and other life events. This bird’s eye view helps us connect memories that seem distant to our living thoughts. As we become more aware of how emotions are embedded in our memories, we can better anticipate how we feel about new situations when they occur.
