6 Point Snowflake Patterns – Paper snowflakes are so fun and easy to make. You can create beautiful snowflake designs with a simple piece of paper and scissors – in less than 5 minutes! This classic craft never gets old and is a very inexpensive way to add winter cheer to any room. Before you know it you’ll have your own little paper blizzard!

We’ve created 9 free printable snowflake templates that you can print out (you’ll find them near the bottom of this post), or you can follow the simple folding technique and make your own 6-point paper snowflake pattern.

6 Point Snowflake Patterns

Hang them on the fridge or in the window. Or attach a piece of fishing line and tape it to the ceiling. This is such a great winter craft and a super fun way to make decorations that will last all winter long!

Easy Kirigami 6 Pointed Snowflake Tutorial

Do you remember making paper snowflakes when you were little? Do you try your best to fold the paper correctly and then go to town cutting out random shapes?

I remember being so excited to unfold them to see what shape I made. It’s pretty amazing to see the beautiful snowflake shapes you can make with just a few cuts!

Using a standard piece of letter-sized printer paper, take the bottom right corner of the paper and bring it up and to the left edge. The bottom edge must be perfectly aligned with the left edge.

Run your fingers along the diagonal edge to create a crease. You should have a perfect triangle shape, with a long rectangular shape on top.

Cut the rectangular strip on the right side of the folded paper. You will be left with a triangle that will unfold into a perfect square!

Step 1: Take a square piece of paper and fold it diagonally in half to form a triangle.

Step 3: Fold this small triangle into thirds. Start by bringing the right end one third to the left.

Step 4: Then bring the left end one third to the right. The templates below are easy to use, but if you’re doing it freehand, you may need to adjust the folds to make sure the edges line up perfectly.

Step 6: Cut out your snowflake pattern along this small triangle. You can cut triangles, diamonds, curves or even half hearts. If you cut off the tip, you will have a snowflake with a hole in the middle.

Step 7: Carefully unfold your snowflake and use your fingers to flatten it. If you want it to be really flat, you can iron it on a very low heat setting.

You can use printer paper, newsprint, or construction paper to make paper snowflakes. Do not use heavy paper or it will be difficult to cut.

I like to use plain old letter (8.5″ x 11″) printer paper, but any size will work. You can use legal paper (8.5″ x 14″) if that’s what you have – then use the scraps to make two small snowflakes to go with it. Or if you have tabloid paper (11″ x 17″), you can make extra large snowflakes.

How To Make Paper Snowflakes Into Ornaments Using Paper Doilies

If you have trouble cutting printer paper, try using parchment paper instead. Parchment paper is much thinner than plain paper which makes it easier to cut.

You can use any scissors as long as they are strong and reasonably sharp. Children’s scissors are often not strong enough to cut through all the layers of paper.

I like to use “detail scissors” for paper snowflakes. These are small scissors with short, sharp blades (these are my pink scissors in the video below) that make it easy to do detailed cuts.

When using the templates, the process is exactly the same as above, but I’ve marked the lines and patterns where you need to fold and cut.

Just make sure the printed lines are on the outside as you fold. Don’t fold to the lines, or you won’t be able to see them when it’s time to cut out the pattern.

Most of us know how to make a basic 4 or 8 pointed snowflake. Follow this easy 6-step tutorial to step up your paper snowflake game (to create more “realistic”, lifelike snowflakes).

How To Cut And Fold Awesome Paper Snowflakes

If you are using rectangular paper, start by making a square. Simply fold a corner so that the edges line up and form an isosceles triangle. Cut the excess strip of paper with scissors and go to step 2.

Is the paper already a square? Fold diagonally in half (at opposite corners, to make a triangle) and go to step 2.

This is the hardest step… Visualize your triangle in thirds (as shown in the first image), then fold the “thirds” to the right (as shown in the second image). If you want to be precise, every “third” in this step is a 30 degree angle.

Repeat with the left side, folding (as shown in the third picture). Try to line up all the folds as closely as possible for the most symmetrical snowflake.

Snowflake Coloring Pages

Flip your paper over and take your scissors and cut the top diagonally (as shown), making sure you cut all the layers evenly. This cut will form the tip of your snowflake.

Draw a design on your snowflake, use your imagination! You can make simple triangles on the sides or show your artistic flair with complex, abstract shapes. Tip: Coloring or marking the shapes you plan to move can make cutting easier.

Be careful not to cut from side to side or you’ll cut your precious snowflake in half!

Lay them pressed flat against a book for a few days or ironed between sheets of paper. Display it with clear tape on your windows or hang it around your house with string or invisible fishing line.
