3d Paper Shapes – After a lesson on shapes and forms as elements of art, my colleague Francesca Dallago created these 3-D solids with her 7th graders, drawing lines on white cardboard (220 gr/m2) and cutting out the templates. They then decorated the templates with different patterns in black and white, one on each hard surface. They then folded and glued the paper to create a seamless geometric shape. This activity requires precision and imagination.

I think it’s so neat that you can do so many different things with a piece of paper. Today I want to share with you how we made 6 different 3D shapes out of paper. I also have printable templates for you.
Learning to make these shapes would be great for geometry or just practicing naming 3D shapes.

My kids thought it was really cool. They played with them for a while. Then they tried to make many other shapes out of paper. They were all very impressed.
All you need to create these 3D paper shapes is paper, scissors, pencil, ruler and tape.
I also have printable templates with a few more 3D geometric shapes if you want an easier way to make them! I have them in my shop.
To create each of these 3D shapes, I used an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper.

How to make a 3D cone: I drew a large circle for the cone, then cut a wedge out of the circle. Wrap it around and add a piece of tape to tie it.
How to make a 3D cube: A 3D cube requires a cross shape with flat squares. Mine was 2 1/2 inches on each side. You need four squares down and three across.
How to make a 3D triangular prism: A triangular prism is made by dividing paper into thirds. Then make triangular cuts in the middle. I measured the edges of my paper sections so that the side of the triangle was the same length. This ended up being 2 3/4 inches on each side.
How to make a 3D square pyramid: A square pyramid starts with a square and then triangles come out from each side. Mine is about 3 inches on the side. You need to make sure that all the sides of the triangle are equal to the sides of the square.

How to make a 3D rectangle: For the statue, I divided the paper into quarters. Then one of the sections needs to be cut into a square. I did this by cutting it into different parts and removing the parts.
How to make a 3D octahedron: The octahedron was the hardest. It is a series of 8 equilateral triangles. Six of them are in a row, pointing in opposite directions. The other two hang from the ends.
For the 3D octahedron I made 2 inches on each side, but it was very small. You would probably fit 2.5 inches on the paper. To fold this, start folding the triangles and it folds into shape. Add tape to keep everything together.

One of the common 3D shapes shown in the tutorial is the cube. Sometimes we have to make a DIY cube to keep us interested in the lesson. Therefore, it requires several materials. One of them is to download 3D shapes for cutting. We can just call it a network. A grid refers to a flat surface with specific lines and cuts as guidelines for creating a 3D shape. A 3D shape can be created if we bend the mesh accordingly to the limits. So, as an introduction, the material to be used is usually foldable, such as paper or some type of thick plastic. Networks are always 2D in shape. To make it bigger, it needs to be folded and glued.

2. Prepare the following materials: a piece of thick paper or cardboard, scissors and glue. If we just want to copy the template, prepare a ruler, pencil, eraser and marker (optional).
We have two options here. We can print 3D shapes to cut out a pattern on a piece of paper or replace the pattern itself.
3. Glue the specific side. Make sure we apply the glue to the side that should be hidden. This helps to keep the network in a defined volume.
2. Start drawing the template on a piece of paper. Use a ruler to measure the line accurately and straight. Use a pencil to make it easier to correct mistakes.

3. After drawing the border, try to thicken the line using the marker. This helps to better define networks.
4. Once the mesh is finished, we can do the same steps as when we decide to print 3D shapes to cut out the template. We can cut, fold, glue and insert the excess. Exploring the properties of three-dimensional shapes is fun for all ages! Because children are introduced to 3D shapes early, you can do them with toddlers or use them with middle schoolers to explore more complex math. No matter how you use them, this set of folding 3D shapes is sure to please!

I highly recommend printing the grids on standard paper rather than plain paper. I’ve tried both ways and the regular paper is too thin.

If you printed on white cardstock like I did, take some time to get creative and color or decorate before placing the shapes! This could be a great math art project!
If your students are older, have them label the different parts of the shape (face, edge, base) before assembly to use as a reference throughout the shape study! 🙂
Then carefully fold each tab to glue the shape together and fold each side of the shape.
Finally, glue each side. I suggest putting a few dabs of glue on each tab and holding it in place for a few seconds before gluing the next tab. This will help ensure it stays together.

Once all the figures are assembled, you can use them however you want, depending on the age of your children!
