There are certainly worse things than celebrating your 18th birthday under coronavirus quarantine. For one, you can actually get Covid-D on your 18th birthday. Or you might catch the Spanish Flu on a Navy ship en route to fighting in Europe during World War II. This is not, by any means, an indication of the real problems we are now facing during the coronavirus pandemic.

All this criticism that kids are the problem because they spend too much time on social media and don’t know how to meet face to face? It makes me nervous. Don’t even get me started on adults who blame teenagers for everything without taking any responsibility themselves. If anything, this quarantine is proving those critics wrong. Not seeing their friends is one of the hardest parts of this quarantine for my teens and young adults.

Missing the opportunity to celebrate your 18th birthday with friends is a huge disappointment. On top of canceling many special senior year experiences – musical theater award performances, final dance performances, graduation, PROM, even first-year college experiences like orientation… make it even harder.
Our youngest is going through this, and I grieve with her. Because it will also be the end of me for many of them. And she reminded me – “Hey, Mom. All your kids are adults now! How about technically kids now?”
You don’t need a big party for people to tell your daughter how much she’s appreciated. I was so happy when her big sister spent all day, and late into the night, telling her how special she was on her special day. The decorations and cake really add something special to the day.

For the best look, you want color and variety for sweets on your tiered dessert plate. My daughter started doing this very late. It was already something like 9 o’clock. So after applying extra macaron to the middle layers, she added a few simple things.

My daughter hated wasting paper in large leaves, so she made confetti by sprinkling it on the table.
Notice how the three different shades of green really add to the effect! I wouldn’t worry about that.
My daughter made a balloon garland with just ribbon and her own balloons, but you can buy balloon garland kits that make it easy.

For the tissue paper streamers, she simply stacked the tissue paper and cut the edges. Mix the colors, and secure with a tie attached to a plastic bag in the middle. Then tie it with a garland of balloons.
You can really add it to any chandelier. It works especially well with our modern linear crystal chandelier.
Among the things that made my daughter’s day on her 18th birthday? Friends who post birthday specials for her on social media!

Looking back, my 18th birthday was obviously too memorable to forget because I don’t remember a peep of what I did… maybe something to do with a long-term relationship and staying up all night watching movies.
