Are wedding programs an absolutely essential part of getting married? Definitely not. Is it a fun (and really fully functional, sometimes very useful) thing? Yes, no doubt. Wedding programs may tell your family the name of your bridesmaid’s former college classmate they’ve never met. They can gently but firmly tell people to put down their phones during the ceremony. Or low-key compliments on how good you guys are walking down the aisle with an instrumental version of Beyoncé instead of Wagner. More simply, your wedding program can tell people what to do during your ceremony and when. This is especially useful if you are having a religious service or a service with traditions that most of your guests are unfamiliar with. It’s all fun and games until no one knows the words to the hymn, or they have to lay their hands on you during a blessing, or what the Jewish rituals you perform mean. A marriage program is a great way to help people feel informed (and let them know they’re not lost).

And if, like me, you’re having a religious wedding with traditions that are unfamiliar to many of your guests, they can be really important. Everyone said….

Maybe, maybe not. There are times when wedding programs make a lot of sense, but sometimes you don’t really need them. So before you add “design and create wedding programs” to your to-do list, think about how useful they can be.

What does your wedding program include? Well, here’s a basic list that you can add and subtract. (See these comments for more ideas.)

Not everyone will have the easiest time developing their wedding programs. If you’ve lost a family member or your families are mixed and it’s not as simple as naming your parents, that’s okay. First, remember that you’ve probably already discussed how to name and list your parents on your wedding invitations, so instead of trying to figure it all out, go back to the decisions you made about your invitations and use that as your guide. And if it’s going to be too difficult, just don’t include the last names: give thanks to your families and communities and stop it. Here are some ideas for ways to tactfully welcome everyone to your wedding program:

Wedding programs can be a great place to remember the departed, but figuring out how to talk about a lost loved one can be really difficult and emotionally complicated (trust me , I’ve been there). First, remember that if you list the parents as “hosts,” that’s not where you want to list the deceased’s name. The host line indicates that these people are alive and inviting you to a party (and no one wants to answer “Where’s your dad?” questions at your wedding). Instead, it often makes the most sense to have an “In Loving Memory” section. If you come from a religious tradition, this is a good place to use words specific to your practices (in the Jewish tradition, we say “In Blessed Memory” and add Z”L after the names of died. Your traditions will differ ).

In terms of design, your wedding programs can be as simple or as elaborate as you like. You can pick a great design from Minted, add your text, choose the order of punches, and you’re good to go (when we threw a 10th anniversary party, that’s exactly what we did). Or you can come up with a great DIY design that combines form and function, like printing text on a fan for a hot summer party. And as many program design options as people have, there are also price and design ranges. If paper is your thing, you can choose an expensive deluxe option complete with embossing, luxury linen and custom artwork. Or you can make some copies at your local copy shop for a whopping thirty bucks and call it done.

When it comes to actually building the design, you can be elaborate or simple. For the first, consider hiring a designer to create a custom look or get a professional program like Adobe InDesign. On the simple side, a basic word processor is totally possible! A hack with a simple word processor program is for heavy cardstock style or impression paper (even kraft brown for a simple look works) and doing some simple embellishments after printing, like ribbon or wax stamping. Printing at your local print shop can save you a lot of trouble (hello, paper jams), but if you’re looking to get some mileage out of your home printer, go for a simple layout: think of wide, loose margins, a simple column format, and a size that only calls for a center cut (with a paper cutter, please!) on standard Letter-size paper.
