Oh, how I love a good deal. I truly believe it sets the stage for your event. A good invitation will let everyone know what to expect and get them excited for your party! Ironically, even though I design custom wedding invitations for my business, I rarely create invitations for my own parties. I hate wasting paper…LOL! (Weird!)  I did enjoy putting together these invitations for my daughter’s graduation, though.

I shared inspiration for an “Oh the Places You’ll Go” party in my previous post, including using real balloons for the invitations. The invitations will be given to the children at school at the end of the day to take home, so there are several ways to access them…

Dr Seuss Party: Oh The Places You’ll Go Party! First Birthday Celebration

1. The balloon is packed in a box so that it floats when the box is opened…the invitations are kind of integrated…it’s the “shock and awe” of the invitations… .totally cute, but the boxes can be expensive and a lot of the rest of the packaging bothers me .

2. The invitation is rolled up and tucked into the balloon…and then has to be removed to remove the invitation. We’ll call this a “crowd pull” call…great idea, but we’re talking about asking 5-year-olds to pop their balloons…probably not going to be effective.

3. The invitation is actually printed on a balloon, which is then either fully inflated or attached with a card that guests can inflate when they receive… another nice variation… “join the audience” invitations if the guest has to blow up… it’s necessary more waiting time and $$ for this approach.

So what’s a hot air balloon challenge designer to do? After much thought, I went back to my retail roots and decided to use a laminated hanger at the end of the balloon string. There is no need to inflate the balloon, and you can cut and paste the invitation into a scrapbook. I combined the simplicity of a flat map with the drama of a helium balloon and combined it all with a sweet image. Oh, and did I mention transparency?? (Yes, I actually have a box ready. Did you know I used to be a scrapbooker??)  I love the idea of ​​having a clear top layer with an invitation peeking out the back.

Oh The Places You’ll Go!

Step 1: Scan an image you like. I chose an illustration from “Oh, The Places You’ll Go” to match the theme of the party.

STEP 2: If necessary, adjust your image in a photo editing program. I lighten my colors and crop the image to the size I like. My current online photo editor is PicMonkey. It’s completely free and has tons of fun, simple tools… so simple

STEP 3: Open a new word document and insert your image…squeeze that image on the page as many times as you want. Mine is spread across four pages on an 8.5 x 11 inch sheet. (If you’re more of a graphic designer, feel free to use whatever program you like. I figured everyone would. Everyone has a Word program.)

STEP 4: Print your document on transparencies according to the manufacturer’s instructions. You may need to flip the image in the printer to print correctly. (Check your manual if you don’t know how to do this – there’s usually an option in your printer settings.)

STEP 5: Cut out your image. I have an Exacto paper cutter with a laser that helps me line up the cuts exactly where I want them to be. (I know!  Isn’t that great??) Without this, you can easily use scissors or a ruler and box cutter.

STEP 6: Create the invitation text in Word by creating a text box the same size as your transparent image. I found Dr. Font. This awesome free Soos from FontSpace and use it to add authenticity to your designs. Once you’ve formatted the text the way you want, duplicate the box as many times as necessary to fill the page. Then print on cardboard and cut out your card.

STEP 7: To assemble your cards, you will need to stack the two layers and punch a hole in the top. I found that my traditional hole puncher couldn’t get through the clear coat, so I used my trusty old “drill everywhere” scrapbook paper…it worked perfectly… . You can also use a nail or an awl and a hammer (or shoes, which is what I used with my punch!)

STEP 8: Add the tie string and thread the string through the back. Cut off any wild ends.
