Probably refers to the 1885 British general election held on 24-18 November. was held in December 1885 and resulted in Lord Salisbury becoming Prime Minister in a minority government. In today’s edition, Lord Salisbury as Moses points to the parting of the Red Sea, which is labeled “conservative reaction”. After him on the right are Israelis. Richard Asheton Cross kneels at his feet. Left, W.E. Gladstone as a “modern pharaoh” rides across the plains in a chariot drawn by a “Scottish donkey”. His Liberal colleagues are drowning, although some Conservatives plead to save them: they are Charles Bradlaugh (pulled by the arm), Joseph Chamberlain (wearing a monocle), George Goschen as a woman rescued by Lord Hartington, and others. In the foreground, the people representing religion, wealth and industry are also asking the Israelis (conservatives) to save them.

Amazon.com: Moses Crossing The Red Sea By Raphael
The painting depicts the Israelites escaping to safety from Egyptian captivity and miraculously crossing the Red Sea. Dominating the composition, Moses stretches out his staff against the Egyptians, who are trapped far below. On the right, the horrified Israelis, their children and animals form an idealized chaos. A young mother holds out her hand, perhaps in thanks. Property is scattered in the foreground, somewhat Egyptian in style, reminiscent of Egypt’s years of slavery. Henri-Frédéric Schopin won the prestigious Prix de Rome for history painting in 1831.
