The Kansas University sports team has used a colorful and friendly symbol in their logo since the beginning of the 20th century. The funny and memorable cartoon of a bird has been slightly updated and bright over the years without losing its character and importance.

The original Jayhawks logo, introduced in 1912, featured a blue bird with yellow legs and blue shoes with red accents. He stood with his legs crossed and looked easy and cool.

The 1920 redesign made the logo more professional and tough by redrawing the bird in a more realistic and detailed manner and superimposing the red and white ‘KU’ monogram in a strong and straight geometric serif font. This bird is also carried in the same blue and yellow colors, which give a sense of movement, energy and professionalism, while red adds passion and warmth.

In 1923, the sign was redrawn again, this time in a more refined caricature style. Jayhawk’s head is painted red while his yellow black is enhanced and harmonized by yellow and red boots. Bird has Ted’s “KU” monogram emblazoned on her blue jersey.

The Jayhawk changed its direction from left to right in 1946. The bird’s face got a wider smile and a better expression, making the whole image brighter and brighter. This crest has remained with the team for sixty years, making it the longest running and most recognizable logo in Kansas Jayhawks history.
