If you’re looking for an iPad Pro, choosing the right model size isn’t easy. It was simpler when the larger option was enlarged by its bezels, while the smaller option had a much smaller display. I’ve been using the 12.9-inch iPad Pro as my primary computer for five years and have been very happy with it, but as the smaller iPad Pro screen has grown, I’ve become more intrigued by it.

The first smaller model that tempted me was the 10.5-inch iPad Pro from 2017. The 9.7-inch from 2016 wasn’t enough; As an iPad user since 2010, I knew what a 9.7-inch display felt like, and it just wasn’t right for my needs as a primary computer. But the 2017 screen bump was intriguing, so I gave it a test run for a few weeks. My Recommendations: It was a great device, but the split view was a little cramped, and since I used the iPad primarily at home instead of traveling regularly, sticking with the larger model made more sense for my needs.

However, I recently started another experiment with the smaller iPad Pro. In the latest episode of Adapt, my iPad-focused podcast with Federico, we challenged both of us to try to get our work done on an 11-inch iPad Pro rather than our usual 12.9-inch setup. A lot has changed since my 2017 experiment, so it was the perfect time to try the smaller size again.

Which Ipad Pro Should You Buy: 11 Inch Or 12.9 Inch?

First, the smaller iPad Pro screen just got bigger again. The gap between 11 and 12.9 inches is relatively narrow. And even though the current pandemic has forced me to work from home more than ever, before this global crisis I regularly took my iPad on the go. In 2017, I was living in the suburbs of Dallas, but now I call Manhattan home, so it’s easy to walk out my front door, visit a local coffee shop, park, or other public space, and get my work done.

Finally, the idea of the iPad as a modular computer was another motivation to try the 11-inch model. I usually use my 12.9″ iPad Pro in “laptop mode” with a hardware keyboard attached. But lately, I’ve been wondering if this approach is so limiting that it makes me miss the full potential of the tool’s versatility. Using my iPad not only as a laptop, but also as a tablet and desktop setup seems intriguing, for several reasons I’ll get into later, and I think the 11-inch model is better suited for these alternate setups.

So a few weeks ago I ordered an 11-inch iPad Pro with Magic Keyboards for both the 11- and 12.9-inch models; I also bought a USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter so I can connect my iPads to an external display. All of these purchases allowed for a thorough comparison of the two iPad Pro sizes, tablet, laptop, and desktop configurations to determine which iPad was best for me. As I mentioned, I was already happy with my 12.9-inch model, so I was particularly focused on testing the 11-inch model and evaluating its unique points.

Here’s what I learned from my experiment and my decision about the iPad of the future.

My time with the 11-inch iPad Pro over the past few weeks has been full of surprises, some positive and some negative. On a surprisingly good front, Split View on the smaller iPad is practically a problem for me, which I wasn’t expecting at all.

Of the ~12 hours a day I spend on my iPad Pro, I spend about half of that time working in Split View. As a result, I expected Split View to be the biggest challenge I would face in adapting to an 11-inch display. The smaller iPad Pro in 50/50 split view uses compact layouts for apps, while the 12.9-inch device has two standard iPad-class layouts. 11-inch apps in Split View are essentially iPhone apps, but wider, while 12.9-inch apps can include additional features, such as displaying a sidebar menu alongside the main app content. Here’s a side-by-side comparison of the two devices.

It’s a big difference, for sure. However, what I realized during this experiment was that when working in Split View on my 12.9″ model, I could never get an app’s sidebar menu on the screen with the main content area . Seeing three or four different “panes” at once, as shown above, looks very cluttered. So my default practice is to hide those sidebar menus to get a cleaner and more focused setup.

My habit of keeping the sidebars short means that in most cases the difference between Split View on the 12.9″ and 11″ models is minimal. Sure, the larger model has more room to display content, but in actual use, I didn’t feel much of a difference in the work I usually do.

It has one great app, but it would have been two if Apple hadn’t cheated the system with one of its apps.

My go-to app for my sidebarless split view practice is Slack. Since the chat platform requires me to switch back and forth between different channels, DMs, and the different workspaces I use regularly, Slack is an app I like to use to allow viewing of multiple boards on the screen at once. It’s possible if you make Slack the bigger app in the 66/33 split view, but I use the 50/50 setup more often and it’s a pain to constantly switch to the iPhone-like Slack menu view.

The second app that would have given me more trouble than Slack was Safari. There is no app I use more often than Safari in Split View. When I tested the 10.5-inch iPad Pro in 2017, one of the biggest pain points I ran into was Safari’s compact appearance in Split View. At the time, as you might expect, the 50/50 split view layout for Apple’s browser looked like this:
