How To Make A Cardboard Graduation Cap – Summer is almost here because it’s graduation season! I am proud of my children’s academic progress this year. My oldest is graduating kindergarten so I wanted to do something special and made this fun graduation cap for us. I think we might even make this an annual tradition.

The craft itself is pretty simple and requires materials you probably already have at home. We’ve put together step-by-step instructions and photos, as well as a template, below.

How To Make A Cardboard Graduation Cap

First, let me say that there are two measurement options for creating this ceiling. One is manual measurement, as I did. And the second one follows the template I made for you. Sign up below to receive it by email.

The first step in making your graduation cap is to cut the square base of the cap, two cap strips, the tassel clip and the tassels. I chose black for my graduation cap and yellow for the tassels.

Then you glue the tassels and the tassel clip (I honestly have no idea what it’s actually called) to the center of the cap base or square.

The two cover strips need to be attached. By overlapping them, you can glue or tape them. I preferred to glue them because the glue often comes off when you fold the paper.

Next, you will need to fold the top of the pieces all the way around, as this will be the lip that will attach to the lid.

After folding it, pull it back to form a 90 degree angle and cut out triangle shapes on the lip. It doesn’t have to be a perfect size, but it will allow the strip to bend and shape more easily.

Next, you will need to form the strip into a ring and connect the ends using tape or glue.

The last step is to stick the lip of the lid tape to the bottom center of the lid base. Congratulations, you have a paper ending cap!

I promised to explain myself. After I made this craft, I wanted to make a template to make it easier for you, so I included all the necessary parts in the file. However, you have the option to measure only your own parts, especially the square, rectangles, and maybe even the circle. The tassel has a more complex shape.

So if you choose to follow the template, you will have an 8″x8″ cover with two 2.5″x9.75″ cover strips. But if you prefer to measure by hand, you can just use standard paper sizes (at least in the US) and have an 8.5″x8.5″ cover. Then you can use the remaining 2.5″x8.5″ for one of the strips and cut a 2.5″x11″ strip or cut two 2.5″x11″ strips.

Cut a 4 x 21 inch strip of construction paper. (You may need to tape two pieces of paper to get a 21-inch length.) Overlap and tape the ends to create a 20-inch tube.

Clip 1-inch slits around the top of the tube at approximately 2-inch intervals to create tabs. Fold the ears inward. (See figure 1)

Cut two 10-by-10-inch squares of construction paper and a matching square of lightweight cardstock. Glue the construction paper to each side of the cardboard.

Place a dot of glue on each tab of the main head. Place the square on top of the tube. Allow to dry.

Make a cap tassel by wrapping yarn four times lengthwise around a ruler to create 12-inch loops. Cut a 24-inch piece of yarn and tie it through the top loops of the tassel to secure it. The kid graduated Pre-K the other day and they made these cute graduation caps. So I reverse engineered it (and improved it) into a tutorial for you guys!

These mortar board caps are made of poster board and foam core…it’s easy and fun to celebrate a graduation milestone.

From the black poster strip, measure 2.5 inches and fold. Then cut 6-8 slits straight down the fold on one side. (See image – note, image shows an example using paper, not cardstock.) [Click images to view larger]

Pull the poster board into a circle (see first picture below.) Measure against your child’s head if handy to determine size. (Even overlapping the sides by about an inch seems about the right size)

Take 48-60 inches of gold thread and double and double again so you have 4 strands. Twist each end.

You have two options here. Use a 4 inch strip of gold as shown here or just make a tassel with gold thread.

Fringe version: wrap a length of fringe, then tie with the end of a string.

Use the pointed end of the fir tree to make a small hole in the center of the foam core. Use a toothpick to push the knot from one end of the thread through the hole. Position the tassel cord so that 1 inch or so of the cord hangs over the edge of the hat. Inside the hat, knot the tassel string as needed to secure it. Stick your tree through the hole in the top of the hat to secure the string as well.
