Toothpicks are a great way to correct mistakes. If you accidentally cut part of the pumpkin, don’t worry, you can always re-glue it using a toothpick to reattach the pumpkin part.
Petroleum jelly is a must for carved pumpkin. Use jelly to coat the hollowed out parts of your pumpkin and keep it fresher for longer.
If you’re new to carving or just don’t want the stress of carving a huge pumpkin, then it’s best to find a pumpkin that’s easy to carve. We recommend using a golden autumn pumpkin, as these are one of the easier pumpkin varieties to carve and are still a medium weight and substantial pumpkin. If you want a bigger pumpkin (but not necessarily the easiest to carve), then Gold Rush pumpkins are worth a look.
When choosing a pumpkin to carve, check for rotten or discolored parts. You better find a blemish free pumpkin if you can!
Cool Pumpkin Carving Ideas, Faces, Designs For Halloween 2022
There is no right or wrong way to carve a pumpkin, but cutting the bottom is better to preserve the pumpkin after carving. I find that if I’m carving a pumpkin for decoration, then it’s best to cut off the bottom of the pumpkin with a pumpkin saw, but if you want to use the pumpkin as a candy basket, then cut off the top to make the ‘lid’.
The main thing that shrinks your pumpkin is lack of moisture. When you cut off the top of the pumpkin and remove the stem, you actually trigger the rotting process and the rot starts at the top and creeps down, ruining your pumpkin.
If you cut from the bottom of the pumpkin and leave the stem intact, the rotting process is much slower and your pumpkin will last longer. Cut pumpkin usually lasts three to five days, unless you live in a colder climate. There are also other tips you can follow to preserve your pumpkin after carving – scroll down!
Raise your (burnt) hand if you have nightmares about putting the candle in the pumpkin! Every year I would burn my hand trying to put the candle or tea light in the pumpkin without success. I would reach down and the flames would reach and burn me. To avoid this, I would try dropping a lit tea light into the gourd hoping the flame wouldn’t go out. What a nightmare!
Pumpkin Carving Ideas For Kids
To deal with this unnecessary stress, you can simply cut out the bottom of the pumpkin, place the tea light or candle where you want them to sit, and place the pumpkin on top. No burnt hands, no mess! Or, if you want to cut over the top, opt for a battery-operated tea light instead.
Being able to level the pumpkin is a game changer. We’re never guaranteed a perfect pumpkin, especially if we leave it to the last minute when it comes to picking your pumpkin.
Being able to level your pumpkin opens up possibilities when it comes to pumpkin picking. You don’t have to fight for the “right” pumpkin, you can buy the cheaper “wonky” pumpkins and if you’ve left it too late to pick your pumpkin, it’s not the end of the world.
Are you one to get ahead of yourself when it comes to pumpkin carving? You bring your pumpkin home, print out your favorite pumpkin pattern, and place it on your pumpkin only to find that when you cut the lid off the pumpkin, you either cut off the design space or you need to cut your design down.
Pumpkin Carvings Templates That The Kids Can Do
Cutting off the lid of the pumpkin can drastically reduce the space you have left to carve. However, cutting the bottom allows you to create a hole to clean the pumpkin, keeping it invisible and offering extra space.
Get creative with your lighting this year. Although candlelight is very natural and atmospheric, you should consider changing things up. When it comes to using string lighting, there are so many options and you can still recreate the soft glow of a candle without worrying about it running out!
So you’ve found your pumpkin and decided if you’re going to climb it or climb it. Now is the time to endure it. It sounds scary, but it’s Halloween!
For many, the hollowness of a pumpkin is a tragic thing. It wears you out, it’s never as easy as it should be, and it gets everywhere! This year, let me help you out with some top tips for carving your own pumpkin quickly and easily.
Mickey Mouse Pumpkin Ideas For Halloween
Pumpkin guts are everywhere, so a great idea is to put down newspaper, kitchen foil or baking parchment and use them as a carving surface. After you clean your pumpkin, you can easily scoop up the surface and store it, compost it, or use it in a recipe.
If you cut the hole for the pumpkin from the top, then you can easily pull the lid using the stem, but how to pull the bottom?
If you’re going for the bottom, the easiest thing to do is cut a hole a little bigger than your fist, but small enough that you won’t see it once the pumpkin is seated. After cutting the circle, cut a small triangular notch on the circumference of the circle. This will allow you to use your fingers or a tool to slide into the opening and gently move the bottom of the pumpkin.
Instead of just scooping the guts out of the pumpkin one by one, use a large metal spoon to turn the inside of the pumpkin and loosen it. Scrape the inside of the pumpkin and pull it out so that most of the inside comes out in one go.

After cleaning the inside, use a flat scraper to clean the walls of the pumpkin of loose debris and debris. This pumpkin carving kit is perfect for all stages of cleaning and carving your pumpkin, making the experience that much more enjoyable.
I like to thin out the side of the pumpkin I plan to carve. This makes it easier to carve out finer details when the time comes.
Once you’re happy with the inside of your pumpkin, clean it with a mixture of bleach and water to preserve your pumpkin and delay any decay.
I would scrub the outside of the squash with a vegetable brush and wipe it clean with a damp cloth. Dry the pumpkin or let it air dry overnight.
