Because I didn’t have enough money to keep me busy, I am now a scout leader at Daisy’s nursery school. My daughter wanted to join the Girl Scouts and there were no groups that were already working for us. We have 10 girls in our group, all kindergarteners and we meet twice a month.
I’ve enjoyed following the blogs of other Girl Scout leaders to see what they’re up to and thought I’d share some ideas when someone else is a Girl Scout leader. Or maybe you can use some of the activities with your children.
First, I created a discussion board about things we need to know about Boy Scouts: The Promise, Boy Scout Law, Pledge of Allegiance and a diagram of how the uniform is laid out. Since I don’t memorize everything myself, it’s good to have a cheat sheet!
After that, we make a work chart. Capers is just a fancy name for activities. See, I learned something new too.

I really didn’t know anything about Girl Scouts other than they sell cookies, but they have a really good program and philosophy. I am glad I signed up to be a leader because I am very happy. One of the philosophies is to gradually do things girl-led… give them a choice in activities (where have I heard of choice before?) and take their ideas into account. The “girl-led” approach to kindergarten is very different from older society. I love the idea that when girls reach middle or high school, they can lead meetings and plan activities on their own! Great for leadership skills!
Which I think I bought at Michael’s but they have it on Amazon. We used construction paper, paint markers and tape to decorate. Good thing I have tons of art supplies lying around my house! So the idea is that their names are written on sticks (I blacked them out for privacy) and then the sticks are put in small envelopes at each meeting to explain what the job is.
Our first meeting was an introductory meeting where we got to know each other and did name tags and such. The second meeting was to find out what the Boy Promise means. We read the book Pinkalicious Pinkie Promise and talked about it.
At our next meeting, we read about Lupe’s article, honesty and goodness, and read the story in the Margarine Girl’s Guide. We played a game of musical chairs and had fun while working on the decorations. I bought plastic balls for decoration and small holiday “things” to put in them like fake snow, feathers, beads, small cymbals, small snowmen, bells, small Christmas lights and more. It was easy for the girls to pick whatever they wanted and add it to the decorations.
What Is A Kaper Chart? (and Fun Design Ideas)
For the next few meetings we will be decorating holiday cookies, going to a garden party put on by Daisy’s 1st troop, and going to a Cookie Blast Off event to get ready to sell cookies.

One of the Boy Scout traditions is the Caper Chart, which is a job chart. We had the girls choose their “type” and color it.
Girl Scout Daisy Ideas!
(If you like these pictures, right click on them and save them to your computer to print.) After the girls colored them, I cut them out and laminated them. Then I attached the girls to the dress, which I attached to this chart.
I wrote the names of the girls behind the nails so that it would be easy to see who was responsible for what kind of work.
