A PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED BY SICK TEAM MEMBERS WHO THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX. OVERVIEW This post will explore some of the characteristics of membership transfers, using First Baptist Church in Vancouver as an example. I will review the original membership letter between First Baptist and other churches. The correspondence I will comment on in this post mostly took place in the same building as the FBC above
One of the first tasks of a group of believers who wanted to start a church was to exchange letters of resignation (from the previous congregation) and entry (to the new house); this act would be repeated in church meetings as the church progressed.
Below is an excerpt from the oldest document of the First Baptist Church: Minutes of the Church Incorporation Meeting (March 16, 1887):
Rev. R. Lenny’s talk on church planting and the qualifications needed for church membership and membership should be consistent. Song. Roar. J. W. Daniels then spoke in Vancouver on behalf of the following members: Brother [ther] E. J. Peck, Bethesda, B.C. [Baptist Church], La Conner WT [Washington Territory] Sis[ther] Mary Peck, Bethesda B.C. (A) Example of “Letter” style of member transfer. From “Correspondence 1908”, Archives, First Baptist Church, Vancouver, BC
The letter above (A) about Mr. and Mrs. Wynne of Central Fairview Baptist Church in Vancouver is typical of the earliest period of correspondence. In what areas?
First, it is a letter, not a standardized form (see for example form (B)). This was typical of smaller, newer, less institutionalized congregations.

It is also a typical correspondence, as it is one church official (J.S. Brooks with the abbreviation “CC” after his name) to another (the FBC clerk was Mr. Thompson). See (C) below for a rare example of shepherd-pastor communication.
Third, the Fairview employee makes it clear that he has no authority to make the request: “I am being asked to write letters of resignation…” His request was granted.
(B) Example of shape style transfer members. Correspondence 1902, Archives, First Baptist Church, Vancouver, BC Note: This form means “blank”, which is not included in the remaining forms. It was completed by a Vancouver FBC official and sent to the San Jose FBC, confirming that Mrs. Hickman had officially “joined” the Vancouver church. See (D) for an empty example that has not yet been attached.
(C) Example of a pastoral membership letter (versus the more traditional client-client style). It is clear from the contents of this letter that the pastor at Temple Baptist in L.A. is a friend or acquaintance of H. Francis Perry of FBC.

The membership system didn’t respect people. At least on paper, everyone was treated the same. Members from Alberta Lone Village Church who want to join FBC Vancouver have stepped forward, as has the incoming pastor and his former pastor’s wife in Cambridge, Massachusetts. See (E) below.
