But while most people think this miraculous event is a work of fiction – written hundreds of years after it happened – there is plenty of evidence that it actually happened.

In 2001, a team of researchers led by Swedish scientist Dr. Lennart Moller traveled in the footsteps of Moses and the Israelites as they fled from Pharaoh in Egypt in hopes of proving the truth of the ancient story.
He also led an American television crew to film under the Red Sea, where ancient remains of the army are said to have been found.
He argued in his 2002 book The Exodus Case that there is ample evidence to support his theory that the biblical story is not simply a work of fiction.

Many academics and scientists have also tried to prove that there is a natural and logical explanation for the miracle of Moses.
Engineer Carl Drews wrote an article for the journal Public Library of Science in which he argued that a mistranslation of the Bible meant that water was not actually part of the Red Sea.
Instead, he thinks it was the nearby reed-filled lake in the old town of Tennis (which has long since dried up) that actually drained – creating a dry four-kilometer path to walk across.

He argues that this would have been possible by a meteorological phenomenon called a “wind subsidence”, in which winds of more than 60 kilometers per hour push one side of the water to amplify a storm.
“The wind is a permanent drop in water level, and storm surge is a rise in water level,” Drews explains.
“This study analyzes two effects that act on a closed body of water, and compares them with observations to calibrate the parameters of a regional ocean model and a wave model.”
In his research, Drews points out that this incredible phenomenon has been observed before in the vast US Lake Erie.
