Verstappen put on new tires while Hamilton stayed on track. The race director initially said that the drivers who had been injured could not have passed the safety car, then overturned the decision which returned Verstappen to second place when the race restarted with a lap to spare.

Mercedes said it was satisfied after discussions with the FIA and Formula 1 about the clarity of the rules “so that all competitors know the rules they are racing under and how they will be followed”.

Nichols’ 2022 season in the 250 class hadn’t even begun when he crashed badly in the Anaheim season opener. Nichols was unable to return for the Supercross season and decided to take a break from Motocross to continue his recovery.
