But some photographers seem to have forgotten a thing or two along the way, because it is an important place that makes maps disappear.

It’s not exactly a hidden gem known to locals either – it’s nationwide. Actually, it has TWO islands.

It’s not the occasional map either, with an entire Reddit thread called Maps Without NZ dedicated to finding world maps and satellite images that don’t include New Zealand at all.
To be clear, New Zealand is at the bottom right of Australia, with the very famous North and South Islands.

To begin with, it is believed that the Maori people first inhabited it in 1280 AD, while Europeans did not discover its presence until 1642.

Which means we’ve had more than 300 years to update our maps – and there’s no excuse for making the same mistake in the future.
Has New Zealand fallen foul of the world map industry? Have holidaymakers envisioned their trips to a tropical destination all along? Was Lord of the Rings even filmed there?
In fact, the country’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern teamed up with Flight of the Conchords’ Rhys Darby to try and crack the mystery in a tongue-in-cheek video.
The Prime Minister shared the clip on his official Facebook page and said he was launching a campaign to “put New Zealand on the map”.

He wrote in the following caption: “Get it. You’ve noticed the absence of New Zealand on world maps before. Some call it a conspiracy (I’m looking at you @RhysDarby) some call it careless … either way. some campaign time! Help us #putNZon the map.”
In the hilarious clip, Rhys explores his own conspiracy theories, including ideas like “Australia wants our tourists, England wants to get rid of the All Blacks, and the wine industry, they can’t beat our Pinot or Sav! “
Whatever the reason, the next time you check a map, see if New Zealand is included (and we recommend finding one that doesn’t accidentally leave out land and replace them with ocean).

The north is like a little lamb, the one in the south is like a potato flower, sweeping southwest into the Tasman Sea. There are about 600 others, ranging from small freckles of rock to life-sustaining landmasses two-thirds the size of Rhode Island. These islands are known as New Zealand. You probably already know: Most people who map the world, it seems, don’t.
This is New Zealand’s complaint. It’s not a big country, of course – it’s not Canada or China – but it’s not small either. At around 100,000 square kilometres, it is the size of the witch-shaped British Isles, which has certainly made its way onto the world map. If it were a US state, it would be the nation’s ninth largest by land area, just slipping between Colorado and Wyoming. But for some reason it kept disappearing off the map, and New Zealanders weren’t happy about it.

These efforts have been posted to the rest of the world on the Tumblr blog World Maps Without New Zealand with the tagline: “Not the most important country most of the time.” This group names and shames groups you should know better: the Atlantic Media publication

There’s a kind of masochistic joy to this collection, and to the subreddit that follows it with 40,500 subscribers. New Zealanders don’t take themselves too seriously: if the rest of the world takes a step forward and forgets them completely, well, it could be worse.
Now Prime Minister of New Zealand Jacinda Ardern is joining the fun. In a new travel campaign, which is using the hashtag #getnzonthemap, a video shows Flight of the Conchords comedian Rhys Darby calling Ardern in a panic over the photo leaks. Is it a conspiracy, you wonder, or has New Zealand just forgotten? “Maybe some people leave us and think we are wrong?” he thought.

Most world maps use the Mercator projection. This 16th century prediction left New Zealand in the lower right corner of the world, and placed Europe in the middle. But the calculation has its flaws: Greenland, which is a third the size of Australia, looks gigantic, while Alaska and Brazil appear comparable in size. In fact, the South American country is five times larger. New Zealand’s Pacific location makes it easy to get lost with a mindless crop.
But there is no particular reason to live that way. New Zealand might as well be at the center of the world, with all the other worlds around it. And indeed it is often found in New Zealand schools. On posters hung on school walls, the Mercator projection is often adjusted to place the equator at the center of the Earth—making it larger, more difficult to navigate accidentally.

“We’re a bit of a country that’s shaped like a mess, a bit like a half-eaten lamb chop,” Darby told Ardern in the video.
Darby notes that Australia wants to steal their tourists, England plans to get rid of the All Blacks rugby team and France is jealous of the Kiwi wine industry.
New Zealand has no maps, including the Smithsonian Natural History Museum, Central Park Zoo, Starbucks and Ikea.
In the video, which is accompanied by the hashtag #getnzonthemap, Darby explores the idea that there is “a grand plan” to preserve the island nation.
