How The Grinch Stole Our Hearts

For 60 years, Dr. Seuss’ book has enthralled children and adults alike, and is a rare piece of accomplished fiction to match its television adaptation; the 1966 animated masterpiece hasn’t lost a step since its debut.

It’s a real load of How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical by Dr. Seuss and, despite some wonky aspects, it’s a tasty enough piece of roasted beast.

The show, which ran all week at the Kentucky Center as part of PNC’s Broadway in Louisville series, is done in broad, bold, and bright strokes. It’s aimed squarely at children preparing for Christmas and doesn’t even wink at adults beyond the rush of simple nostalgia.

The show looks great. Production design by John Lee Beatty and costume design by Robert Morgan make good use of Dr. Seuss’ iconic illustration style and distinctive characters, with Morgan in particular bringing the Whos of Whoville to colorful life.

It does the same with the Grinch, played by Philip Bryan with a manic glee more akin to Beetlejuice than Boris Karloff. Dressed in green fur that looks really greasy like a black banana peel, Brian tears up the stage with his acting and his voice.

However, the show is often more interesting to watch than listen to, as many songs are not played. Timothy Mason’s attempts to use Seuss’s signature prose style in his lyrics are impressive, but Mel Marvin’s melodies are hard to find amidst the often chaotic energy and frantic choreography.

The best song, of course, is “You’re A Mean One, Mr. Grinch,” the centerpiece of the 1966 Seuss and Albert cartoon Hague. It’s beautifully sung by Bob Lauder, who is child-friendly as Old Man Max, the show’s storytelling dog. The best original is “One of a Kind,” which perfectly illuminates a major shift Mason made to Seuss’ narrative.

In the book, the Grinch hates Christmas and Happy Who just because he’s the Grinch and maybe because his shoes are too tight. Here is an evolutionary extravagant, the first and last of his kind, and has not faced his intense loneliness.

In Mason’s version, it’s Cindy Lou who begins to melt the Grinch’s tiny heart and prepares it for the triumphant scene where that heart grows three sizes and the Grinch discovers Whomanity? All this takes place for the sake of hugs, which corresponds to the purpose of the show.

But Seuss’ Grinch was a violent monster who beat Max and shamelessly manipulated Cindy Lou. This brutality served a dual purpose, especially in the cartoon: it scared the children while giving the story enough content for adults to become one of the few series to repeat every year for more than 50 years.

How The Grinch Stole Christmas Play

Dr. Seuss, How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, the musical is clearly up to the task, having been produced almost continuously for over two decades. Kids will love it, but they probably won’t love the soundtrack, which is a big win for parents in a post-Frozen world.

This is my favorite Christmas movie. I don’t really like Christmas movies, but…

Dr. Seuss’s Grinch At The Theater At Madison Square Garden

While Dr. Seuss may be problematic, there’s no denying that his wacky children’s stories are delightful, with

Be one of the best of him. Jim Carrey and Taylor Momsen (while still a virgin) starred in the live-action adaptation (2000), which received mixed reviews but became a box office hit and became the third highest-grossing Christmas movie of all time . An animated adaptation starring Benedict Cumberbatch was released in 2018; received mixed reception again, but became the highest-grossing Christmas film of all time, beating

Is a Broadway hit that predates the original film. Its synopsis is closer to the original story than the live-action film, which added new characters and backstory to create a movie for the whole family. So there’s no Martha May Howier (Emmy and Tony winner and Golden Globe nominee Christine Baranski), no evil mayor (Golden Globe and Emmy winner Jeffrey Tambor), no love triangle between The Grinch, Martha and the Mayor, no background on the Grinch’s arrival in Whoville and the bullying and suffering he faced at school, among other notable differences.

The simplistic storyline of the stage version made it clear that its target audience was children, but the jokes could be enjoyed by people of all ages and it was an enjoyable evening
