Each of these officially licensed beer stetsons is made from an 18-case pack of either Miller Lite, Coors Light, or MGD. These beer can cowboy hats are weather resistant and have an internal elastic band for comfort. One size fits most.

I can’t think of a better way to recycle those discarded beer cans. Now if only they made them in cans from my favorite craft breweries. Maybe the ten gallon sparkling Bock cowboy hat for Texas Brewing.

Making a cowboy hat out of just about any drink box, shoe box, or other cardboard material is easy with my downloadable template. This fun, handmade craft is sure to please the beer or soda lover in your life. A downloadable template makes it easy to place logos and graphics on the front, side or brim of the cap. Each hat takes about an hour to make. Ready to start?

Once the PDF file is downloaded, print it and make sure the scale setting is set to 100%.

Use the layout icons on each print to determine the correct orientation for each page. An outline template can be glued on to keep the edges of the paper neatly aligned. However, the crown template can be adjusted for different hat sizes. I recommend leaving a gap of about 1/4 inch between the pages of the template when gluing a medium size adult head (I think my head is medium size).

Using the template as a guide, determine the best position on the template for optimal placement of graphic elements. Note that the center of the stencil is the top of the hat, so all graphic elements should point outward from the center. After finding the ideal location for the template, use something like a box crease as a reference point and measure the location of the template relative to your reference point. Next, turn the box over and using your reference point as a guide, try to place the template in exactly the same spot on the cardboard. When you are happy with the position of the template, secure it in place with several small pieces of masking tape.

Using a sharpie marker, outline the template on the bottom of the cardboard. Don’t forget to mark the eight cracks as well (see image). Don’t forget to also draw the center line of the hat. Cut down the center from the top of the side panel to the bottom side panel approximately 5-6 inches (see photo). Be careful not to cut through all the cardboard, a loose bill is better than a heavy one.

TIP: You will eventually need to trace and cut two edges, but I recommend cutting just one edge now as your hole may be very large and you can use the edge piece and the large hole at the bottom where it will go. not seen

Once the template shape is transferred to the cardboard boxes, go ahead and cut it out using a craft knife or knife and ruler. Don’t forget to cut eight slits (see photo).

Now that your crown is cut out, fold the left and right side panels by folding them over (see photo). Depending on the placement of the graphics on the front or side of the bucket, you can glue the side flaps to the front and back flaps or vice versa. Once you’ve decided this and your glue gun is hot and ready to go, apply glue to the inside of the flap in a triangle shape and fold it over leaving about a 1/4-inch gap at the bottom of the flaps. Repeat this. for all four flaps Be careful not to burn your fingers on the hot glue.

Track. Before proceeding, test fit the crown. It should fit well at this point and not be too tight or too loose. If it doesn’t fit, you can carefully separate some flaps, being careful not to tear anything, and re-attach them in a tighter or looser position.

As a final step, I recommend attaching a sports headband to the crown of the cap (more on that later), so if you plan on doing this, you’ll actually want the cap to be a little baggy. your head. this point. Once the wreath is to your liking, you’re ready to go.

Remember when we took the sheet music back a few steps? Now is the time to apply some pressure and give this crown a nice classic cowboy fold.

Cut a piece of paper about 4-5″ tall to fit around your wreath and mark every 1″ or so on one of the edges with a sharpie marker. Wrap the scratch paper around your crown and make straight line marks around the crown.

Once you have markings around the crown, use a pair of scissors to cut out each marking. Then fold the tab up and continue cutting and folding the tabs around the crown.

Once your crown is in place, place the edge you cut earlier on the crown. Check that the hole in the end fits well. If it’s too small, the brim won’t fit into the crown. If you can see the tabs, the edge hole is too large. If this is the case, cut another edge with a smaller hole to fit better, otherwise cut the other edge to match the first. Once the edge pieces are cut and fit together, apply a generous layer of glue to the inside of both edges and quickly attach the top and bottom edges with the crown in the middle. Let the glue dry for 10-15 minutes.

Once the glue has dried a bit, it’s time to give your cowboy hat a little bounce by folding the sides up and the front and back of the brim down. The amount of crease you choose to give the brim is up to you, but I think the more character the hat has, the better.

If your hat is a little big, or you just want to ride a bull in a hat, you’ll want to add a sports cap to the inside of the crown. Stretch it out and hot glue it in place.
