Gather all your supplies and start heating up your hot knife with the precision knife attachment (use the highest heat setting). Print a free Mickey Mouse template stencil from our printable library (link at the bottom of this webpage).

If you use larger or smaller pumpkins as needed, you can adjust the size by percentage in the Print Settings dialog box.

Trim the template so you don’t have too much paper and it’s just Mickey’s face. Tape the template to the front of the large fake pumpkin. Avoid any seams from the manufacturing process and make sure they are on the back or sides.

It helps to cut small slits around the template and the corners so that it fits flat against the fake pumpkin.

Using a ballpoint pen or a pumpkin poke tool (like the ones you can find in a store-bought pumpkin carving kit), poke around the edge of the Mickey template. The more holes you can make, the better your carving will turn out. When you are all done, remove the paper template. Your pumpkin should look like the image below.

Non Scary Pumpkin Carving Alternatives For Halloween

Insert a hot knife with an Exacto knife tip into any hole to begin carving. Carefully carve the surface with the foam pumpkin. The slower you go, the better the results. Be very careful! The knife is very sharp and the hot knife is very hot! Remove the pumpkin pieces after carving.

Next we will make a hole for the back of the foam pumpkin with a hot knife. I initially started with a very small opening and decided to make it bigger when trying the next step. Make sure your opening is as big as mine before proceeding!

Here you will also want to heat a wooden bead to the back cover so you can easily remove the back of the pumpkin and access the LED candle that goes inside. If you don’t have a piece of wood around, you can make a circle the size of your finger to easily remove the back of the pumpkin.

Grab a piece of opaque vellum paper and cut out separate pieces for each facial feature (4 pieces in total). They should be large enough to cover the surface feature and allow the hot glue to stick to the inside of the pumpkin. Dry fit each piece and see how it looks and fits before before gluing it permanently with hot glue.

This vellum step helps make the pumpkin “glow” at night and look like a real Main Street Mickey. You don’t have to do this step if you don’t want to, but I think it’s worth doing if you have the time and want a more polished and professional look.

Remove the stems from 3 inch mini pumpkins using a hot knife. Some pumpkin stalks grow out of the pumpkin.

Using a pencil and tape measure…mark where you want the ears to go on Mickey’s head. Make sure the distance is level and equal from the mic head stem. You don’t want one ear to be under the other or crooked, so spend some time figuring out where you want to glue your ears.

Once you’ve marked your spots, apply a generous amount of hot glue to where the legs were on the little pumpkin. Quickly attach the little pumpkin to Mickey’s head. Hold in place until the hot glue sets. After the ears are attached, you can carefully add more hot glue if needed.

Add a bright, non-flammable LED candle or tea light inside the Mickey head you made earlier. The bigger and brighter the better! Now your High Street Mickey Pumpkin is ready to display on your front porch for those who trick or treat!
