Anime Eye Shapes – These are some of my favorite clip studio painting brushes that I use when creating anime eyes: I usually use the “G-pen” and “Mapping pen” for sketching and creating details;

“Smooth Watercolor”, “Watercolor” and “Watery” are the ones I will use the most out of all and I will use them mainly for blending colors, creating details and polishing pieces.

When creating a character, shapes actually have a specific psychology that you can use to target your audience to understand your character without knowing anything about it.

“The science that studies the effect of shapes on people is known as the psychology of shapes. The study claims that each shape has its own meaning and affects our minds and reactions differently.

So if you’re going to use these shapes on a character, it could be a director, a boss, or someone who leads an army. Or maybe the villain of your story, or just an edgy character.

This is the most commonly used and common shape used to make anime eyes; and I think you can totally understand why: most of the protagonists have round eyes, mostly because they’re soft, and you have to feel safe looking at them. So if your character is sweet at heart, a pair of cute round eyes is the best for her.

This is also a shape you can recognize in many anime eyes, and it can have two meanings; a character with “triangle” eyes is not necessarily evil, maybe just strong enough.

Anime eyes are generally very simple, just a reflection of the realistic ones we have on our faces; but that doesn’t make them any less profound or important. You can easily cut complex shapes into softer and simpler ones; for example, most anime eyes completely lack a tear duct or lower lid.

Start by adding a base color of your choice, then in multiple layers start adding shadows with a soft brush; (I’ll mostly be using watercolors); make gentle strokes from the upper corner of the iris.

Using the same method, create more and more depth in the upper corner of the iris, adding darker and darker shadows; I’ve left the palette of colors I used in the top left corner of the piece if you want to use them. Then move on to create the central pupil where I created a soft soft shadow around it. Then “hug” it with two soft lines.

You may not notice the difference between the two pieces; but I’m using this image to help you understand and learn IMPORTANT: don’t always stay on the same color spectrum: I used a deep purple to give the eye a more interesting look. If you use only blue, it will be dull and less deep.

With a soft brush and the ADD GLOW layer, choose a bright light blue color and create super soft brush strokes in the lower corner of the eye; this will add light to the eye without being too much or too little. I used a SOFT hair brush.

When you’re happy with your light, make subtle strokes in the next ADD GLOW layer to create this crescent effect. Leave tiny “tears” along these lines to make the eye look deeper and more interesting. I also added the light around the pupil to make it pop more.

When you want something to stand out more and immediately draw attention to that particular thing, surround it with a lighter color: when you look into the eyes, the pupil is the deepest and closest to the soul, and I wanted whoever is looking at the piece to immediately be led to to make the current connection look and feel.

I continue to create this arc or crescent shape in the eyes; It is quite simple to make:

Create a GLOW DODGE layer and create only a half circle. Then gently erase the inner part with an eraser until all you have left is the thing and the glittery line. I then proceeded to add a spot of light to the top of the pupil

Add an additional color effect with purple or any other color of your choice on the iris using the OVERLY layer and a soft brush.

To color the lineart without going outside the edges, just “Lock Transparent Pixel” by clicking on the transparent pixel padlock icon.

Once you’ve locked in the layer, simply pick the colors you like best from the entire piece and spray them with a soft hairbrush. I also added some shadows to the skin to make it look fuller.

Connect all the layers and with a fine watercolor brush, just calmly blend into the piece in a linear fashion. Now you can see how it looks more unique!

Gently add more and more details to blend even more with the skin and iris. Play around with colors and shapes until you are satisfied

Using the same brush, I added tiny eyelashes to the piece. When creating the eyelashes, I used the same color of the “cap” that is also attached; as you can see the bottom ones are pink and the top ones are blue. Using the same colors helps unify and makes the piece more cohesive.

Adding detail with CLIP STUDIO PAINT is extremely easy; therefore, it is the best tool for creating anime content. It has a WHOLE section where you can use glitter and cute brushes to add detail to your pieces or manga leaves! I personally use them A LOT and added a Sparkle A and a *soft* circle to my piece to make it look cuter.

Additionally, I created more layers and added shadow to the top of the eyes to add depth using a dark blue color and a soft brush.

Using the “Mapping Pen” I added direct light to this piece with white dots all around. There is no rule as to WHERE you should place the light directly into the eye. I like to add it on the side, in the upper corner, near the pupil and at the bottom where the lower lashes are. I also added a little on my cheeks and upper lid!

To create a “glow” effect, duplicate your light layer always using the “add glow” layer and use the “Gaussian Blur” option under FILTER > BLUR > GAUSSIAN BLUR. It’s a good idea to make a site like this where you just draw a bunch of different anime-style eyes, maybe while watching your favorite manga to get a clue of what the eyes should look like.

When you draw anime/manga characters yourself, finding the right eyes can sometimes be the hardest part. If the eyes are excluded, the expression of the entire figure is lost. Eyes are called the “window to the soul” because the eyes and eye expressions tell us so much about their personality and feelings.

Now there are many different ways to draw anime eyes. But that’s one method I came up with through trial and error.

I started with a basic head model. Showing a perfectly symmetrical face is not so realistic because we rarely see such people. So I turned my head a little. If you get used to introducing asymmetry, your work will look more realistic.

So first I got the bottom line based on where the circle representing the skull meets the bottom curved V line representing the jaw. This point, the top of your jaw, is the bottom of your ear. And your eyes are at the level of your ears. Then you need to decide where to place the top rows. By drawing a line across, the eyes come out at the same height, so they look proportional to each other.

I drew dark lines on the lower and upper lashes. In the manga style, the top line is longer and they usually don’t blend together. These are the eyes I’m drawing for this tutorial. However, if you want a compound eye or a specific eye shape, you can draw that shape in this step.
