Thomas of My Porch and I (relatively speaking) took a morning book tour to Baltimore to check out the Baltimore book thing. Thomas hears about a bookstore where everything is free, and what book lover can resist the call of such a place? Knowing nothing about this company, we lowered our expectations reasonably low and let them drop a bit as we turned our backs on the upside.

We walked into the small front room and at first we were afraid that was all. But there was too much, too much around the corner. On the first shelf he scanned, Thomas immediately registered two popular books. And then some. Although he is not a librarian, he has the ability to scan the library shelves. Very impressive. He can do nothing. Please do not attempt to include it in a competitor’s used book purchase. You won’t win.
The rules of engagement seemed so clear here that we laughed and bowed to the whims of the characters.

We’re nostalgic and campy and over the top in a few places, like “any committed Jamesian would do well to check their blood pressure before opening this book.” I can’t think of anything that raises my blood pressure more than Henry James and Jacob’s men.

But overall, the experience, Thomas added at check-out, was wonderful. We find book shopping casual and fun. And for free. The store told us stories about the city that gave us these books, and also brought back book memories from our childhood, including Scruples in the public library and the gray Scribner classics owned by grandparents. This is not a place for collectors. It is a place for readers. Especially nostalgic readers.

I tried a few control records, but this is the one I ended up solving and will be using for the upcoming new year. I have committed to being more frugal with my spending and I think this will help me better than others. Knowing where my money is going is so important, I think going back to writing checkbooks is the way to go. I still use my electronics for calculations, but when making purchases I use this as a first step to see where my money is going.
