My favorite part of designing this penguin nail pattern was making the fingers and toes. It was a nice change of pace after doing the same old members for so long.
Thankfully, Peter’s name starts with a “P” so I can keep my tendency to overshare. Peter was obsessed with penguins as a child. I’m sure he owns at least a dozen penguins and stuffed animals.
He was playing around the house pretending to be a little penguin. He loved it!
Fast forward a few years and Peter is now an excuse. He was kind enough to pass on some of his collection to my son, so his love of all things penguin is alive and well among the Hoofs.

Who is cute in everything black and white? Peter the Penguin! He likes to break the ice with jokes, but he’s also shy and can get cold feet.
Begin by knitting 3 single stitches around legs 1 and 2 3 times.
After making the first and second fingers, fasten off, leaving a 5-inch tail. Once you’ve done the third finger, don’t glue.

On Round 4, single crochet each stitch around. After completing the 4th round, single crochet until it reaches the edge of the leg (this should be 4 additional single crochets).
Leave a 12-inch tail. Use the yarn tail from the leg to sew the holes between the holes, then hide the yarn tail from the work.
The last step is to pinch the last turn of the leg together, sew a slip stitch, and then hide the tail from the work.
Easy Crochet Animal Patterns (all Free!)
This video shows how to connect each leg while connecting the 7th round of the body and head. At this point, you should have both legs ready to attack. At the end of round 6 you still need to tie the body.
We attach the legs in the form of nails 7. Turn the legs to the right side of the work. In this round we will make a sequence of 5 single crochets and 6 double crochets.
Now we complete the sequence: sc 4, inc. Now that the legs are connected, count from the round head and keep the sequence of 5 single crochets, making sure to increase by 3 times.
Continue round 3 times by continuing and increasing the sequence of 5 single crochets. At the end of the round, you should have 42 points.
Crochet Penguin Pdf Pattern
At this point, your two wings should be complete and ready to attack. At the end of the 28th round you should also bend the body. We’ll start hooking the first wing on the last stitch of the 29th round, and then we’ll finish hooking the two wings around the 30th.
Begin round 29 with a single crochet in the first 4 stitches. For the next 11 stitches, switch to white yarn and single crochet. Change to black thread and single nails 14.

At this point, you should have a full muzzle and be ready to attack. At the end of round 38 you should still have the body and head attached.
Penguin Amigurumi Free Crochet Pattern • Spin A Yarn Crochet
The beak is rounded to round 39. Single crochet 9, white thread, another stick 9.
Place the beak on the right side of the work. Attach the stitch as you sew the next 6 stitches.
Single crochet 9, remaining 27 stitches black, single crochet. At the end of the round, you should have 60 points.
Between rounds 41 and 42 of the body and head, insert 2 markers to see where to place your safety eyes next.
Pattern Pompom Hat Penguin Amigurumi Pattern Crochet
Leave the stitch markers in place and you’ll be doing 43 – 50 rounds, so I recommend using a piece of yarn to mark these stitches, it’s easy to tie around them.
Cut a piece of yarn about 18″ long. Tie a large, secure knot in one end and thread the other end through your knitting needle.
Insert your needle through the back of the head and stitch between the two places where you have a safety eye (marked with thread).
Pull your yarn, this will create a mark. Secure with a knot and tuck your yarn tail into the head.
Amigurumi Penguins Crochet Pattern: Penguin Couple
Open one side and wrap the yarn around until it forms a semi-circle. Close that side and cut off the tail.
Go back to the other side. Take a pair of scissors and cut out the center on both sides of the pom pom maker.
Cut an 18″ piece of yarn, find the center, and insert it into the center of the maker. Secure with a double knot to keep the pom-pom in place.
Be sure to keep the tails long as they will help you attach the pom-pom to the top of your penguin hat.
Adorable Amigurumi Penguins With Free Crochet Patterns
Except for the hat and scarf, all parts of the penguin must be complete. To add the hat, we work the exposed front round from round 48 for the body and head.
We join the 2nd chain at the beginning of the double circle with a slip stitch. Chain and skid points are not included in the number of points per round.
To begin round 1 of the hat, tie a slip knot on the hook. Keep the penguin on the right track. It doesn’t matter where you start on round 1 of the hat. I want to start focusing on the back of the head.
Single crochet each stitch around. In the back loop only, the first stitch is added to the slip stitch in the round.
Free Penguin Crochet Pattern — Cilla Crochets
In Round 2, we only connect in the back loop. We will use the exposed front loops from this point to add trim to the hat in the next step.
If you’re not used to crocheting in the round, I recommend placing a second stitch marker in a different color over the first double crochet. This indicates where to slide at the end of the round.
At the end of the round, a slip stitch is sewn inside the first double crochet. You should end up with 48 points in the round.
From rows 3 to 6, chain 2, double crochet in each stitch, then slip stitch.

At the end of round 6, tighten, leaving 18 “tails”. Do not fill the cap. Pass the end of the tail through the needle and knit between each stitch on the last round. Combine the rounds, then add. Pom-pom on top.

Like Stanley Duck, I made a few extra penguin toys so I could experiment with different yarns and different techniques. And like Stanley, each penguin came out with its own personality. It’s fun to mix and match different types of yarns, varying in weight and feel.
The first Penguin is made primarily from Lion Brand Scarfie Yarn. I’m really drawn to the warm tones of the silver/cream color in the scarf. The yarn is self-extracting, meaning it has silvery streaks that fade to soft cream and then return.
