Octagonal Cottage Home Plan
In addition to the house floor plans you ordered, you may also need a floor plan showing where the house is located on the property. You may also need rafters sized to handle roof loads specific to your region. Your home builder can usually help you with this. You may also need a septic project unless your lot is served by a sanitary sewage system. Many areas now have area specific energy codes that must also be followed. This usually involves completing a simple form that provides documentation that your home’s plans are compliant.
In some regions, a second step must be taken to ensure that house plans comply with local codes. Some areas in North America have very strict engineering requirements. Examples of this are, but not limited to, the earthquake prone areas of California and the Pacific coast, hurricane prone areas on the Florida, Gulf and Carolina coasts. New York, New Jersey, Nevada and parts of Illinois also require an inspection by a local professional. If you are building in these areas, you will likely need to hire a licensed state structural engineer to review the design and provide any additional drawings and calculations required by your building department. If you’re not sure, building departments usually have a flyer they give you that lists all the items they need to submit and obtain a building permit.
Also, stock plans do not have a professional stamp attached. If your building department requires one, they will only accept a stamp from a licensed professional in the state where you plan to build. In this case, you will need to take your home plans to a local engineer or architect for review and approval. Also, plans used to build homes in Nevada must be drawn by a licensed Nevada architect. village This Oneida County example is charming, with a deep porch, corbeled cornice, and cupola.
The start of the architectural conversation in the market is located in Barneveld, a part within the greater city of Trenton, New York at 107 Vanderkemp Avenue.
The House History Man: The Other Octagon House In Washington Dc
Although the shape itself has ancient roots, these architectural curiosities gained their brief popularity in the 19th century with the publication in 1848 of Orson Squire Fowler’s book “A Home for All,” which promoted the octagon as the ideal shape for a ‘house. The book was a success and went through several printings in the 1850s, sparking a flurry of Fowler-inspired homes.
This was not his first foray into authorship: Fowler had published several works on phrenology and was well known on the lecture circuit, along with his brother Lorenzo. In the 1840s, the brothers, later joined by their brother-in-law as Fowler & Wells, operated the Phrenological Cabinet in Manhattan. Visitors can peruse a collection of skulls, and the curious, like Walt Whitman, can sit for an examination of their skull to gain insight into their personality.
Fowler turned his interests to architecture and “A Home for All” set his vision for a form of home that was both beautiful and functional. This could, in his words, “bring comfortable housing within reach of the poorer classes”.
According to his calculations, the octagonal shape provided more floor space for the same cost as a rectangular structure and allowed for more windows, increasing the necessary ventilation.
