How To Draw A 5 Sided Star
Do you want to learn to draw a figure in the shape of a star (not actually a star in the astronomical sense)? If you follow these steps, you’ll be drawing a regular 5-pointed star or a 6- or 7-pointed star in no time.

To draw a star, start by drawing an upside down “V” on the page and do not lift the pencil from the paper. From there, draw a diagonal line up and to the left, crossing your first line. Then, ending on the right side, draw a straight horizontal line on the paper. Finish your star by drawing a diagonal line down and to the left to meet the starting point of the upside down “V”. If you don’t want the middle lines to be visible, you can delete them and leave only a star outline. To learn more, how to draw a 6 or 7 pointed star, keep reading the article! To celebrate this year’s winter solstice and the once-in-a-lifetime conjunction of Saturn and Jupiter, I created this colorful star design. It’s basically a series of 5-pointed stars drawn by cutting thousands of dots. I’ve also run a 3 hour bar and geometric art workshop and will be doing it again from time to time, so let me know if you’d like to run another one. Drawing a perfect 5-point star is easy with a compass and ruler. Here are two methods with step-by-step instructions on how to draw a 5-point star.
I used a Sakura Micron Pigma pen with just a 0.5mm nib to draw the image above, but you can also consider a fine point to draw a more complex multi-dot design.
As you will see, a simple 5-pointed star can be drawn either with or without a protractor. There’s a beauty to drawing without a protractor that I like, but try both and see which you prefer. If, however, you want to try something a little more challenging, check out my star and cross pattern tutorial.

Here’s what you need to draw a 5 point star. Note, you don’t need a protractor for the first method.
3. Make your compass slightly wider than the original circle and place the point on your compass where the line intersects the bottom of the circle (marked by the black cross). Draw two short arcs as shown below.
6. Place the compass point in the center of the circle and draw two more arcs as shown below.
7. Place the point of your compass next to the horizontal line on the left side of the circle and draw more arcs intersecting the previous two.

8. Connect the two crosses you just created with the second vertical line. This line runs parallel to the original vertical line.
9. Place the point of your compass at the intersection of the two lines you just drew and draw a circle passing through the center of your original circle (as shown below).
10. Now place the point of your compass along the vertical line that passes through the center of the great circle and the bottom edge of that circle. Draw an arc semicircle that kisses the edge of the smaller circle.
11. Holding your compass point in place, draw a second arc that kisses the other side of the small circle.

12. The intersections, marked with green crosses below, should be equidistant around your original circle and are the five points of your star.
13. Staying with the pencil, connect point 1 to 2, point 2 to 3, point 3 to 4, and point 5 to point 1.
14. Place the pentagram in a pencil and you can use it to draw the outline of your 5 point star in ink.
I love the beauty of drawing geometric designs using a compass and a straight edge, if you want to draw a more complex star design, you may find it easier to use the following method.

You can divide 360 degrees by 5 giving 72 degrees and mark your circle using 5 equal divisions – 72, 144 (72 x 2), 216 (72 x 3) and 288 (72 x 5) degrees.
As before, you can draw the outer lines of the pentagram to give you a perfect 5-pointed star.
This winter solstice, December 21st, the two giant planets Jupiter and Saturn appeared as close together in the sky as they had seen in nearly 800 years. It was rumored that they would be so close that they would look like a bright star. There is some debate about this, but whether it happens depends on where you are in the world, how good the visibility is, and the weather. If you have low vision, you can see them better as a bright star, and because of the time of year, it’s no wonder people call it the Christmas Star. Last night was cloudy where I live and the best night to see the stars during this conjunction may be Christmas Eve.
So who was the original Christmas star? Some believe that the unusually large bright star mentioned in the Bible that appeared at the birth of Jesus was a conjunction of planets. But that’s just one of many theories. We do not know the exact year or time of year when Jesus was born.
